Hi. How do you release the tension on the upper chain to change the cams/head gasket?

Hopefully you don't need to take the engine out to get to any bolts!

The car is a 2.0 td4 2004.

Also do I need the timing kit to reset it?

Thanks

I had the head off my TD 4 earlier this year to do a HG only to find a crack in the timing cover, so I just replaced the engine.

RAVE has good instructions on how to remove the head. have you got a copy of RAVE?

To release the tension on the timing chain you need to remove the cam cover and the access cover for the tensioner (Side of engine near thermostat) then rotate the exhaust cam. This will allow you to insert a locking pin into the tensioner, via the access cover. You then need to un bolt the cam pulleys to allow you to remove the cam shafts.

If you are removing the head don't forget to remove the bolt that is hidden under the curved timing chain guide (you can't see it with the guide in place)

I don't think it is possible to set the timing without the timing kit, but you remove the head without removing the engine
