I did a search on this but was not able to find an answer so I wondered if any of you good people could help me with a quick question about locks and latches.

Basically the drivers side door latch on my 300 TDi 1994 90 is now jiggered. It will lock but will it hellers like open again unless you climb inside via the passenger door and jiggle the lock button until it opens. Trying to unlock with the key now is virtually impossible and I think if I turn the key any more it will just snap off in the lock.

So I thought that maybe the new Defenders had a slightly better lock system and I wondered if I could buy say a lock kit for a newer TD5 and retro fit it to my 1994 defender?

Correct me if I'm wrong but don't the newer ones open to doors with the ignition key? If so is it possible to retrofit a new latch handle and lock to the drivers and passenger side doors and replace the lock barrel in the ignition so that these three all use the same key?

Can anyone shed any light on the part numbers I need?

Thanks

Hi, I am not a pro on this, but as far as I know you need to get new door handles too, as the barrel is longer. Not sure how the barrel fits in the back door.

I think they are more secure, but no better lock system. Have seen some kits on eBay

My defender has no barrel on the drivers side, so I always have to unlock and climb over!

My passenger side latch did this, on my 1990 Defender. I could usually bash the door and wiggle things until it opened but eventually it gave up the ghost and i had to strip the door card to get it open - for once I was pleased about the rusted door as it meant it wasn't really attached along the bottom so it just lifted up once I undid the handle and window winder etc.

I went for new latches TD5 type, not even sure if they make the earlier type any more. The passenger side one has "worn in" and seems to require some tweaking now but the latches never seem to be very good on these.
