Currently got a 2004 Facelift Disco. Owned for 10 years, been pretty reliable, bit loathed to upgrade, but fear it's getting on a bit and can afford to upgrade.

I've always wanted a Range Rover and am considering 2011 ish design. Saw a 4.4 diesel Autobiography at a LR dealer, looked pretty smart, but is this a wise choice? I want a comfortable car with features to make long drives a doddle and good off road capability.

Are there any key known issues to look for?

I like LR but perhaps I can get better with other marks, so I'm also open to other suggestions?

Thanks so much for your help.

You won't get better with another marque....just more reliability...

What to look out for??? Everything that has a wire going to it is a potential fail item.

The TDV8 engine is fecking awesome and by far the best choice - but they do like to eat turbos and alternators in 60-80K mile chunks.....

The ZF box is stronger than previous models but still needs tender loving care and regular servicing to keep it from eating itself.

No other car will bring a bigger smile on your face, go on, if you can afford it - do it:) Best car in the world (slightly biased;))

All cars have their problems - Thats life - This is a Great Forum to keep your LR running well for longer if you're up for a little DIY

Not sure if the 4.4 tdv8 suffers the same issues as the 3.6 did ?

At present the 4.4v8 diesel has been a strong unit, havent seen any problems like the 3.6v8 have.

Powertrain wise it has all been reliable, it near on the end of the line for the l322 and most of the problems had been ironed out. Havent seen many wiring faults, a few loose connectors backed out pins etc but no major failures ad of yet.

The only thing that I have seen a few times is the drl led going down when these do expect a new light unit at a price of 700 plus vat depending on what the unit has in it etc.

The engine is unbelievable the power and how smooth it is and the power delivery is good in my opinion.

I work on these everyday and the majority of them is service work brakes fluid changes etc.

I've been really happy with my 2012 Westminster. Has more than enough toys to make me happy on both commutes and long distances. Totally agree that the TDV8 is a stonking engine. You'll love it.

Update: Sadly I was rather disappointed with it's handling and ride, and agree the bench in the back was far from what I'd expected. I've finally put a deposit on a Range Rover Sport (the car I said I'd never buy), gone crazy and bought a 13 plate. It could be a 3.0 or the 4.4, bazaar as it sounds gov.co.uk think it's a 3.0 and the dealer thinks it's a 4.4 - hu?!! On paper the 4.4 doesn't sounds a lot different, any owners care to discuss this point?

Trying my best to get the detailed maintenance history out of LR, blood from a stone comes to mind.

Any known issues with these rather fine beasts I should be aware of??

PS if anyone's interested in a 4.0 petrol Disco 2 ES Premium let me know, but you'll have to be super quick (would much rather it go to a good home rather than thrown into the auction by the dealer).
