Hi folks, I have read many threads on the merits of biodiesel but I want to know if there is anything new about veg oil in td5 engines?
From what I have read, many start and some find the use of 'chip fat' filtered or not, is great but then after 6 months it can go very wrong.
Does anyone have more to add to this? I have a Discovery 2 TD5, 03
With 97k on the clock?
Would you suggest running 50% used cooking oil is a good idea?

I have looked, but most of the postings that I have found have been from some time ago. The reason for asking for updates, is that some folks talk about starting to use veg oil, but there is little to say how it went long term. I don't want to start down a road that leads to disaster is everyone else knows how it will end.

Thanks for the advice, but as I said, I was looking for updates. Unless I have mis read the read, the info was written in 2008 and 2009.
Sorry if I have got it wrong, I am new to the forum, I thought someone might some more resent info.

The link I put up is for a thread started in 2009 but is still active so plenty of recent info if you'd read it.

Thanks for all the help, and here is a tip for anyone running on old veg oil. The idea was pushed when I spoke to the canteen manager at a local school. She has to pay to have the old oil taken away as the local council now charge schools for all the recycling. If you want to help your local school, pop in and arrange to take their waste oil. They will love you and you will be helping the kids.

The only problem with that is that public institutions such as schools often have to show that the oil has been disposed of to an approved waste carrier for environmental rebate purposes. You may have to write them out receipts which if you are trying to stay off the radar in terms of fuel taxation could cause some problems. Make sure your documentation is good just in case. I believe you are allowed to make/use 2500 litres for personal use before you have to, or are supposed to, start paying fuel duty.
