Well its a week since I changed the fuel filter housing on the Td5. The tank is now well below 3/4 full and I have not experienced any poor starting due to air in the system, the continuous cranking and a noisy fuel pump.

All I can conclude is either :-

(A) That little orange bladder valve in the housing I mentioned last week was allowing leak back as it was deformed.

(B) The actual filter housing had become porous. I must add that it was extremely fragile on removal and the metal snapped around the bolts. Seemed to be made of some metal alloy and cast....not very good at withstanding the harsh conditions on the underside of a Defender.

Whatever it was all I can say is that new injector seals had no effect, a new fuel pump was a waste of money and if the same happens to you just consider changing your fuel filter housing as I really do feel that this is the source of many of our problems guys and girls...hope this helps some of you. PLEASE ONLY BUY A GENUINE PART, BUY CHEAP BRITPART RUBBISH AND BUY TWICE AS THEY ARE NOT ALL THEY SEEM THATS WHY THEY ARE CHEAP!

Good news,

So as the little orange chappie does not appear as a seperate item which filter housing did you buy? as the ones I see only show the newer style with the updated air bleed valve. I will have to check which version mine has when I change the fuel filter.

Cheers

The orange bit fits onto part VUB503950 which they call non return Vv. Its a black plastic thing on the return. ( it has nothing inside just a black tube of plastic so why they call it a non return is beyond me).The air eliminator fits in the filter housing on the inlet from the pump. My filter housing had everything inside. Genuine Land Rover part at £120 is.

Type in Google Land Rover Td5 fuel filter images and you can view lots of drawings showing everything except the orange fellow.

Well changing the fuel filter housing has cured my Td5 starting problem. Starts 1st time now with the tank 1/2 full. So guys for the price of £130 and 5 minutes of your time you can save hundreds not having new injector seals or a fuel pump as your garage rips you off as they have no idea actually what stops fuel returning back to your tank. If yours does it...try it and see you may surprise yourself and cure it.

Could be injector washer have started to go, this can cause it not to start as air gets in the fuel system,
If your dealer has also not put the injectors back in the order he took them out that causes snags too as the ECU does not recognise each pot. There are 625 possibilities of getting it wrong (5 x 5 to the power of 4). I bet there was nothing wrong with your old ones and it was your fuel filter housing and components causing the problems....dealers again not knowing how a Td5 actually works
