today my 95 3.9 seemed to have a miss while driving. changed the plugs. still the same like the enjun was cutting in/out. noticed no leeks (of significants) but abought 100 yards down the drive I seen smoke coming into the cab. I stopped, turned it off, and by now its a smoke storm, so I dun the first thing that came to mind R.U.N. like hell. I waited for the smoke to clear and inspected the damage. the tranny dip was hanging out bought 4inches with fluid everywhere, plug wires fried, vacume lines to the plentium melted along with the battery wire to the starter, one heater hase busted and burned, a/c fooked, along with lots of other wiring, o2 sensor wires fried, starter wires fried. and thats all I have found so far. so that brings me to my questions. 1. why was the tranny dip out with fluid everywhere? 2. could all this be fixed on a budget? 3. what major problems should I be looking for that is not fixable without a compleet rebuild? and all this happened on the right side sitting in it.

At a guess the fluid boiled in the trany because the sensors fried, pressure built up and vented at the dip/filler. An electrical burn out is a disaster, with things like relays and ecu's the cost can go on and on, and if you are unable to find the cause then it can happen again.

When working on electrics always do so with the battery terminal loose in case of short, the wiring goes in seconds.

I worked on an astra once and although it was a charging fault and a relay which had failed, unknown to me the alternator had a dead short and when I plugged the new relay in it went up in seconds, everything was so hot I was unable to pull the relay back out, I never had the battery loose and by the time I did, the motor was fooked totalled. I cut back the wiring but found various items all in different stages of destruction.

So to recap, expensive repair and one you could regret once you start throwing money at it, go for an insurance claim and if you want ask for the salvage back, and then you can fook about, I have always said that electrics can take 2 minutes or 2 days in your case you can have no indication of burn out but have fooked and spiked loads of electrics including your radio.

The burn insulation does you no favours heath wise either....

Glad you mentioned that, some of the materials in vehicles when burnt leave behind an acid like the **** that burnt through the space ship in alien, it dunt burn metal or such tho just flesh and amputation is the only cure. Think you would have to be un unlucky bastid though but possible.

thanks to all. and here is what I have found; the a/c fooked, plug wire fooked, batt. wire to starter fooked,. I have replaced all the before mentioned. and it runs, however;;;; the tranny is shot... I let it sit and idle for abought 15- 20 min. and it did not miss, get hot or otherwise. it seems that the only "real" damage is the tranny, and a/c. I did not do the a/c replace nor will I "thats what windows are for". and I think from what I am finding is the only "fire" damage was realy from the hot fluid melting everything not a real fire. and for the ABS, its been disconnected prior to me owning it, along w/factory sterio. and I would claim it to insurance but it has none, (farm vehicle) I did however notice the on board diognostic display had the number 02 on it just prior to this but no one could tell me what this means (anyone know?) I am going to stat replacing items with smoke, and fluid damage and look for a used tranny or rebuild kit for this one, if anyone in the U.S. has a tranny just laying around it would great, I will come and get it if its not too far, or pay the shipping. Thank you all so much for you help and any ideas or suggestions are greatly appriciated.
