ah right, aye ive been under there with a bar and moved them about and they move back into place as if the bushes are still supporting them. And yeah they dont move by hand. The A-frame ball joint or whatever it is seems to be pretty solid aswell. Are there bushes at the front end of the..?..hockey stick?? where it fixes to the front axle?

cheers shifty, keep in touch
The radius arms (hockey sticks) have two bushes each where they bolt to the axles plus a single doughnut type bush where they bolt to the chassis. When they wear out the movement is side to side which causes the knocking. If you put a bar between the axle and the radius arm you might be able to see the movement. The bushes can look perfectly OK but still cause problems. I had the same kind of knocking, changed every bush for Poly bushes excepting the anti roll bar bushes (cos they had sold out of them), guess which ones were shagged? Took the ARB off and knocking vanished.

That's an innovative approach Shifty! If it's making a knocking sound just take it off! How's the handling without it...

I took it off to confirm the cause of the knocking and until I could get some new bushes and drop links. It's back on now and it's all painted and shiny to boot.
Early Defenders and some later TD5s for export were not fitted with ARBs but had all the mount points on the chassis and axle so to my mind its no big deal.
The handling seemed no different to me even when cornering at speed but as my TD5 is a CSW with seven seats I'm sure it would have an effect when fully loaded.

No arguments here - just lively discussions. :argue:

hey fokes, garage told me the problem.

Just a really worn and old transmission on my landy, the hardy splicer or whatever it is is worn and has a slight rattle which would be causing the knock. 500-600 pounds for a gear box rebuild so im just gonna live with it.

and today ive spent all day trying to get my high gear transmission thing back into high range coz it slips out if i put it into low range then back into high, its a baaasterd like!

but i think thats all people, cheers for the input.

may drop in 4 a chat some time Buster.

Laterz
