can anyone advise me,is there 2 different sizes of u/j for the propshaft,im suspecting ive got a knackered one due to excess vibration, when i phoned up to order some i was told there were 2 sizes 75mm and 82mm which would be easy to measure if the prop was stripped down of the car,but as im wanting to order them first,im stumped, any help or advice would be apreciated,it,s a range rover vogue v8 4.6 2000 model.

cheers john, been doing some surfing myself,so i can get them ordered tommorow and hopefully get rid of this horrible vibration

andy - what's the vibration you're getting?

as you might know, i fitted a spring kit a month ago which I'm really pleased with, except that now I've got a rumble which is getting worse. comes and goes with speed and load.

the heavy duty springs lifted the tank between 1-2" and it's been suggested on here that the UJs are past their working limit. i'd be interested in replacing the UJs depending on price, as otherwise I'm looking at a wide-angle prop.

have you any idea if any of the Disco props or UJs fit the P38?

cheers
Jock

i,ll be honest jock i think mine was a result of a knackered vcu in the transfer box,but basicly when i get anywhere near 50/60 mph the whole car vibrates and shudders.go above 60 and it,s fine,at first i thought wheel balance but had them checked along with full wheel alignement and it,s fine but i do have a slight bit of play on the front prop so for £20 for 2 u/j,s i may aswell sort them out.

Mine becomes quite bad at about 55-60. It'll disappear if you ease of the gas, or floor it, and it disappears past 70 but comes back again. It sounds like you're on the rumble strip on the hard shoulder but of course I'm not. I'll get the guys to check it next service and see if they can diagnose, but I'll soon be into elimination by replacement...

Make sure you get the exact right ones.

The P38 is different to the RRC and Defenders. I went through 2 spurious ones after my original one went belly up for the lack of grease. The 2 spurious (RRC) ones then knackered the other original. I replaced all with OE ujs from LR and everything is fine since. Flipping costly but however you live and learn.

The P38 OE ones are much sturdier than the replacement ones, are the same cup size but are fractionally smaller (I think it was 74.8mm as against 75.2) but it made all the difference.

it was 2 hardy spicer u/j,s i got,ive fitted them, took it for a spin, most of the vibration has gone, but at around 57 mph you can still feel it,so im wondering wether to do the rear prop, but on the big down side,i have noticed coolant weeping from the passenger side head gasket, roughly from where the head locating studs are,so it looks like the heads are coming off, before i tow the caravan to eastnor castle next month:(

Sorry to hear of your woes Andy. Run the torque wrench over the head bolts/studs again just to check..may need a "Tweak" now that things have settled..unusual, I know, but worth trying before a stripdown. Are you losing much coolant??:behindsofa::tea::smokin:

it,s not losing coolant as in you look at the expansion tank and wonder where has it gone,it just looks like a slight weep,if you run your finger on the bit where the head meets the block near the front head locating stud it,s wet like a drip size,i was thinking of just checking the torque, but if the torque is ok i don,t want to tweeke it to much incase i strip the block thread or snap the head bolt.
im tempted to order a head kit from island 4x4 and if need be strip it over the bank holiday weekend,or maybe remove one bolt aand replace with a new bolt one at a time, not sure how im going to approach this one yet.

unless when i lifted the block the other week, has had something to do with it:confused:

If you didn't slacken the bolts/studs when you lifted the block, I can't see that affecting it..after all, you can drop a completely assembled engine in. As you say, check the torque setting....if o.k., to be sure, replace the head gasket.
