hi all

just wondering if anyone has ever converted their landy to run on unimog portal axles?

i assume they are significantly wider than standard land rover axles. there is a pair on ebay at the moment which i am considering to put on the truck for belize

failing that, what about volvo c303 portals? anyone done this, or know anywhere i can possibly get hold of the volvo portals?

also - anyone know of any volvo c304's for sale, or just the 3 axles?

Bringing back an old thread here..

Using the Unimog Portals what ones are the best to use? What Gearbox do you team them up with? Do you still run them with the standard 200tdi lump etc?

Just something I'm Interested In, have no Intention of doing something like this anytime soon as I don't even own a Landy yet..

404's I think. As Andy said though a little too heavy.

A standard TDi should cope ok, the gearbox ratio's will need reducing probably mainly due to fitting larger tyres than the portals themselves. I mean why fit portals to run 265/75s? your going to on 35" plus which would need the reduction in gear.

I did look at bolt on style portals, these used to be made by maxidrive but are hard to come by now. There is a company in Germany who now make some, Killeraxles or Tibus, think they are the same. I never enquired about price but I would imagine them to be around the 5-6k mark.

Andy, any ideas on the price of bolt on portals?

I love the idea, but I would rather use the $$$ the travel. If your going places outside the UK that need portals, you need even more $$$ for other HD parts and more again for back-up if/when it goes wrong.

the wheels and tyres at the moment are 20 inch split rim mog steels with beadlocks with 39.5 16.5 R20 pitbull rockers. in the long run these will essentially be the road tyres, going for a set of 44" TSL boggers as the serious rubber.

they will be going underneath my 110, which is currently in this format :

engine for the minute will stay 300tdi - the engine in that 110 is an absolute gem, it pulls like no other land rover i have ever driven. so for the time being anyway it will stay 300tdi, albeit with a full length intercooler and performance rad, some decent hoses, a more efficient air intake system and possibly a slight timing increase. see how it copes, can always change it later but it should be ok, i dont exactly want to break land speed records with it. engine is being mated to a custom ashcroft transfer box built with the differant ratios in mind

front and mechanical axle lockers also and it should be quite a pay and play and salisbury machine, until i get it out to where its ability really gets tested
