From the pictures, I know that garage. So can say without a doubt any work done by them will have been correct. They are Land Rover enthusiasts themselves.
I definitely got that impression from the chap I spoke to. I'm feeling really confident (the odd doubt creeping in now and then when I recognise the risk as there's so many pigs in the poke out there needing thousands spending on them). Mind you, if my funds start running dry, I can get myself down to Preston docks. I don't fancy delivering messages or sewing on buttons though :)

welcome to the best LR site there is, as others have said use your security religiously pedal locks steering lock , locking bar even if your only popping out of the truck to grab a paper , get it etched if its not already and shower it in smart water then register it with the smart water company. I bought two bottles and drenched mine. fit a kill switch so it wont start and try not to park it where they can get at it with a hiab etc . its not just the finest truck ever made its your investment cos its price is only going to rise, and lastly have great fun

Well I'm home with it now. Could only really remember so much, but went through the things advised by my new landyzone buddies (thank you). There are other things that I couldn't have known to ask or check. As I say, not the sharpest button on Landys yet. There's no doubting the chap has spent thousands mechanically, but I just took a risk on whether the conversion is OK legally and mechanically. It must be as it's a reputable garage that has done all the work. They put a newish 300tdi in it. This meant that other things needed juggling about. The reverse knob doesn't correlate to the gear (should go left and up but now goes right and down). I was told before doing the deal that the tank is in a place that makes a step into the drivers side hard to fit (but I'll have to find a way as I want steps). Seller never told me til the deal was done and the cash away that the rear door lock is fiddley (actually, I can lock it, but in the lock position, I can't withdraw the key, so security is even more of a worry at the mo, so drive gates locked and in front of cctv). He also then told me that the petrol gauge only goes half way up as the tank is smaller and only holds about £40 quids worth, but he said it's never bothered him as the dial works and you know when it's getting low. I'm sure I'll discover more problems this week? Gonna put it through the garage for a full health check on Monday. Now I've got to find an insurer for the modifications. What d'yall think? Also, is it a massive job relining the interior roof. I don't do saggy vinyl. And what can I fit that'll demist the passenger and driving windows?

the gear change knob purports to a LT77 gearbox so you have the R380 maybe

my defender is the same but is ok if the lock engages properly when shut I push mine shut with a firm hand I don't slam it

a chamois leather with your hand wrapped around it or a 12 volt hairdryer

 - So, it has an LT77 knob on an R380 box  - gear knobs are cheap enough :D

They put a newish 300tdi in it.

Cool. The R380 is the "right" box for the 300 anyway - post some piccies of the engine bay so we can laugh ;) :D

I'd be careful of turning up at a garage unless you know them - as IME they can sometimes exploit folk - just be careful.

Now I've got to find an insurer for the modifications.

The "issue" with modifications seems to be wether you want business use on it or not IME - if you do, then there aren't many choices, but A-plan have a decent enough name, and we use them.....

It's worth a read of the various insurance threads on here, and ask Flux for a quote ( they have a rep on here )

And.... post some more piccies ... we likes piccies :D:D:D

Well at least you haven't said I've been sold up the swanny without a paddle Disco :0) I feel relieved about that (I think, though giving you a laugh by posting the pics make me worry lol. Not business use. It's just for taking the dogs and browsing about. I might try green laning if I can get some diazepam off my GP first :) The seller lived int he mountains of Sctland. I'm talking deep rural. He showed me the diff thing you mention and gear. All smooth and no clunking. We went up a steep incline using the diff knob and it did it at a steady slow speed on its' own. Felt great. Just tried to change my car insurance on quotemehappy. It said my car's not valid as it's more than 17 years old.

part of the plan to get rid of older vehicles IMHO :mad::mad: Ours are 22, so, like us you'll have to go to a proper specialist not some bunch of fools on the interweb.

And, just in case, start telling us you had it delivered to you on a transporter and have only driven it on private land  ;)

I did. Transporter said the weather was bad.

The only issue with Deafeners is whether they are legit or not. The mechanical stuff is simple, and one R380 gearbox is the same as the others .... they'll all fit .... ( for the pedants, yes, I know there are different bellhousings, but they tend not to break  ) Much the same with axles and the rest of it ( but not quite as simple )

though giving you a laugh by posting the pics make me worry lol

I was using :D to indicate I was joking .... still want to see some pictures of the engine though ... 300Tdi is the best engine IMHO..

My point was that you seem to be arranging insurance after the event
I did start this post admitting I was a bit thick :D (big grin this is). Haven't learned the emotion faces yet (or at least I haven't taught my brain to read them like words yet). I drove it back cos I'm insured to drive any vehicle, like hire cars and things like that. It's on the drive now. Anyway. It's dark outside but the flash has picked it up. The bonnet pull is on a wired and came off the bracket, so another thing I have to get sorted. Here's the pics but will take better ones tomorrow

A couple of things, 300 tdi engine, nice motors.

1) The red arrow pointing down, is pointing to the coolant hose that runs above the water pump pulley, check it is not touching the pulley!, a lot touch and wear thru the pipe if the owner is not careful.
2) the red arrow pointing up is pointing at the bleed fitting , there is another on the top of the rad. Get a set of metal ones, most of the usual places sell them , the plastic ones fail over time and break off at the most inconvenient times.

Cheers

Is it not classed as third party insurance. "... drive any vehicle that is not owned by you, rented or hired or leased to you under a HP agreement or rental". I must admit, I wonder if the actual vehicle needs to be insured in someone's name by some underwriter.

Thanks for that. I'm writing all these things in a notebook. I have to say, sterling site and generous helping folk :0)

But it was owned by you , you had just purchased it, plus I always thought it had to be insured by someone else at the same time.

Cheers
Crikey I'm not sure?? I'm really not into retrospectively editing. It's bad form. Allow me those two edits above and I'll never do it again. What I obviously need to do is be steered by the gentle hints Disco kindly nudged. I'll defo phone adrian and A Plan on Monday morn

I was under the impression that you could drive any other car on your insurance (check policy) not owned by you. If it was somebody else’s car, but they didn’t have it insured then if you were not in the car it was not insured:(
I.E if you parked up and went to get a coffee and it got stolen it’s not covered, oppppssss.
You owned the car at the point you drove it home:eek:.please be very careful

A V5 is not proof of ownership it’s the registered “keeper”
Also because tax and insurance are tied together, did you even have a taxed car?
