Hello,

My 200TDi seems to have become a little slugglish lately. I don't think it's just because I've got used to the extra power that's there either :D. I am going to re-adjust my tappets (considering I had to set them following my head gasket swap). What clearances should I set considering that I've had the head skimmed? I also have a feeling that a length of pipe that I used for the top intercooler hose is delaminated, so I'll be swapping that for a nice length of silicone hose. Also, how do I go about replacing the turbo boost diaphragm on the injection pump and where can I get a new diaphragm that isn't a Britpart piece? I will also replace the fuel filter as a matter of routine because I ran the fuel tank dry a few days ago. What else might there be bearing in mind that the engine is in good condition?

tappets should be .2mm - with a cold engine

Ta for that. That is actually the clearance that I adjusted them too, but I can hear one of the cylinders rattling slightly. I'll go over them all again tomorrow and adjust them thoroughly

Clearance may have moved slightly as everything beds down - standard practice to re-adjust them after it has been run in after a head swap (not that many people do it mind you)

Yes I did flush it out before it was fitted (thanks again Sean!), and i gave it a through steam clean inside and out so it was spotless. There is some oil in there again though I have noticed, so I'm assuming the cyclone breather probably needs a good clean. Buster's got a guide for that :D. Put it this way. It was pulling up a ridiculously steep hill in 4th at 45mph the other week, now it will do about 35 in 4th up the same hill. I dunno why! Do you reckon I might have drawn a load of crap into my fuel filter when I ran the fuel tank right to the bottom (causing me to stall)? I'll swap the fuel filter tomorrow and I'll fill it with a mix of injector cleaner and diesel so that it can work it's magic. I've fixed my intercooler pipes today with no noticeable improvement. I can't really think what else it might be all bar the cold weather preventing the engine from reaching its optimum operating temperature. Its running at 1/4, just above or just below at the moment.

Ere Pos, how did you pipe in the air box? I found that when the turdo kicked in, it sucked the concertina pipe shorter temporarily which made it rub against the fan on the alt, which wore through it and meant that a load of **** was getting sucked in.

Also did you change the exhaust? The NA exhaust won't cope with a tdi and will only get more and more clogged and restrictive (but i think i remember you saying you'd changed it)

ALSO...check the usual suspects - air filter, tyre pressure (it's colder, it will have gone down which will substantially increase drag), and put yer doris back on a diet to get her back to pre-chrimbo weight :D:D:D

In cold weather there should actually be slightly more power coz the cold air is denser (and the intercooler will also be more efficient)

I've been keeping my eye on the intake pipe believe you me! It runs from the turbo inlet into the wing where I have an el-cheapo air filter fitted (K&N knock off). The pipe is wedged between the wing and the alternator support bracket, so it can't catch on anything, nor will the fan belt / alternator heat dissipator wear it through. I can kind of rule the air filter out in this case. I will check the intake hose tomorrow for any splits / tears etc.

As for the exhaust, well it's a bit of a miss match. I have the conversion down pipe, mated to a 200tdi front pipe, which is then welded through two lengths of stainless steel flexi pipe which are almost the same diameter but perhaps 1mm out. It then leaves through a length of straight pipe which was taken from the old exhaust system. There are no silencers / cats in the system and the pipework is very short, therefore the exhaust system isn't restricted as such. Should this be okay?

The tyres do look to have dropped slightly so i'll pump them up a touch and see if that makes any difference. I don't like it though when an engine seems to loose its power for no given reason!
