Hi all,

I bought a TD4 from someone who clearly didn't want me to see the advisory notes which I managed to get from the garage it was taken to, here are bellow:

Exhaust Back Box outer skin starting to peel
Fuel Tank cage rusting away
Both Prop Shaft support Bearings perished and weak
Surface rust front and rear and rear metal brake pipes
O/S/F and N/S brake pipes surface rust
Coolant expansion tank cracking
Heater matrix slight leak

I am just wondering whether to go ahead and fix those problems and how much would it cost.
Some of the notes I can do without I guess, but before I approach any garage I would rather know what to fix and what to leave aside if it is expensive.
The car will need an MOT very soon and the hand brake is not working

I am not sure whether the notes affect the MOT as well or not, I know the hand brake must be fixed.

I would appreciated if anyone could assist.

As the MOT system is computerised the garage where you take for the MOT will see that the recommended work has been neglected so may well lead them to investigate further or fail automatically.

If it was mine, as a matter of course, I would check items of the advisory list and make sure they were done before taking to the garage.

Some of the items could be quite bad for your health if not corrected!

This is why you check the MOT history of a vehicle on the dvla website before you buy a car, and anybody who doesn't want you to see the history of their car is best avoided ;)

The faults sound very similar to that of a car I went to buy from Cumbria but found it was a dog! That was a black 05 XEi or something

!

but do they?

I ask as the garage I always go too, gave me an advisory on the vitara that the rear drums needed replacing, I never did it, following year they advised rear brake lines getting a little rusty, I never did it, the next year that the handbrake needed adjusting, I never did it, and this year that the tow bar was blocking the number plate, all times the car has passed, never have they pulled me up on advisories from the past mot's, and never have they repeated them, which I could understand if I went to different garages.

my advice would be, rather than shelling out trying to fix those bits, take it for an early mot, you can get it done upto 2 months before its due and have those months added to your new ticket, if it fails, you still have mot for two months whilst sorting it out, and you'd have a better idea on what needs doing first

Had mine MOTd yesterday and the tester logged into the MOT system to check. He even mentioned the fact I had no advisories last time.

IIRC the system has changed in the last 18 months or so.

Those notes were from a landrover specialist, not an MOT station, as I said, the seller said that full service was done to the car with a receipt from a Freelander dealer but they tore the advisory section to hide it which I only found out when I contacted the garage where it was last serviced out of curiosity.

thats dodgy.

did you not do the online checks etc?

Just stick it in for a new MOT, if it fails on those points fix them striaght away, if it passes just fix them as money allows imo

I did check the MOT's history online, I had a look and nothing was dodgy about the past MOT's it's the last service that was done that had few advisory notes, I contacted main dealer and they wanted £2200

You would probably know if your prop bearings were on the way out.
It might be worth getting the brake pipes checked, but tbh I was told mine were corroded 2 years ago and they're still fine.
Is the car losing coolant/overheating? The cracks in the header tank could be due to HGF but if it's ok I wouldn't worry (and anyway it's a cheap easy fix).
The heater matrix is a git to replace but if you aren't losing coolant it can't be leaking.
Fuel tank cradle rusting - yep I was told that as well. Actually it was only the bits of plate that don't support the tank so I just removed the rusty bits. Gone through a few MOTs since.

Having said all that, I should point out that I have no idea what I'm on about!
