UK based road trips

So the daily grind of life is boring, I fancy an adventure or at the very least seeing something/somewhere a bit different. Which got me thinking, I havent had a proper road trip in my landy yet, and whilst Id love to join in on one of the trips to Morroco or somewhere like that, I cant afford it.

So limiting myself to the mainland UK, where can I go? Any really good road trips people have done and care to share their routes/experiences?

Accomodation wouldnt be an issue because Id plan on camping, preferable wild camping if possible.

I currently live in Somerset, and spent most of my life growing up in Cornwall, so Ive seen pretty much everything the Southwest has to offer, Im after a change of scenery but dont really know what/where Im looking for, Ive just been bitten by the wanderlust bug and got an overwhelming urge to chuck some camping gear in the back, point it at the road and just go, just looking for some inspiration or advice on where to go.4

Two friends have said Scotland, particularly the Hebrides would be a good run, but Ive got no idea of route/location/what its like there etc. Never been to Scotland so dont know what its like, but I do like how theyve described it. Id like to see some spectacular scenery and just anything a bit differant to the current 9-5 daily grind, get far away from civilization and escape everything for a while.

was something on tv last year I think called B road Britain, watched some of it and looked nice driving, might find it on search ? how about lands end to john O'Groats all on B roads with the odd green lane thrown in for good measure. take a bit of planning but could be different

I would second Scotland its a wonderful place.
I would recommend you head up the M6 towards Glasgow and then head uptowards Fort William Via Loch Lomond and take it from there.

Scotland is great forget the run up the M6. head round the West coast dumfermline etc and work your way up the A roads. the scenery and camping is stunning.

Wales. Any of it that isn't a city is quite nice. Scotland definitely has its plus points too.

Ah now Wales Id totally forgotten about, could be a nice trip heading up Snowdonia way, possibly a bit touristy though? Few good ideas so far though, cheers!

Although if you want some thing different Suffolk is an amazing place to go

The West Coast of Scotlandshire, North of Glasgow, is brilliant for camping and has some brilliant scenery, when you get right up North, you can drive for hours and only see a couple of other cars

Yes, around Snowdon it heaves with bodies, especially at weekends. There's a lot of much quieter roads in Wales though, especially in mid Wales. If you like old mine workings, quarries and derelict buildings there are plenty of those too, as well as much older remains such as hillforts, ditches and monastic ruins. Google earth is useful for scouting out places prior to visiting, as are the 1:25000 OS maps available from streetmap.co.uk if you don't fancy shelling out for those overpriced Memory Map things.

There are plenty of single lane roads in North Wales that the tourists never find or wouldn't dare drive Betws Y Coed to Llan Festiniog via Cwm Penmachno is such a route and a truly awesome drive with stunning views. Hairpins turns sheer drop offs thru woods past old quarries and isolated lake.. and the whole off Gywnedd is much the same. Dolgellau to Blaenau can be done on single track roads across the firing ranges. another lovely route. Same round Carnavon

If i was you, id head across the bridge to wales land and head up through brechfa forest and up into snowdonia and then anglesey. Maybe come back down the west coast and back that way.

Wales is stunning and not as far from you as scotland. Scotland is beautiful but, its a long drive to get to the nice parts from zummerzet.

You don't really have to use the dreaded M4, thus avoiding the "entry fee". If you head a bit further north you can turn left and enter the Land of Dragons through Usk and Monmouth. From there, the world as they say is your oyster.

My favourite road in Scotland is the Duke's pass between Aberfoyle and Callander, there's a forestry drive in the middle of it but I've never tried it, I might soon for a day out.

We don't have lanes as such up here but the main roads are often challenging enough.

Ahh bonnie Scotland , only went once and I loved it , mind you we camped at Loch Lomond , then on to fort William , through glencoe and back round through the Trossochs (sp?) Fantastic and must do it again in the 90 !

I think you should plan a trip and pick up LZ folk alone the way to join you for a night or two camping ...that would be fab .

O.K. I'm biased but you won't beat the West coast of Scotland. Get a map, almost any map and just look at the area, miles and miles of nothing with fly **** sized specks of 'civilization'. The further North you go the better it gets, true Land Rover country.

Occasionally it even stops raining.

That is a lovely road to drive. but If heading nw head or sky via fortwilliam and the Kyles of lochalsh, that means if the weather is good you can take a wee diversion and drive the stunning Bealach na Bà prob he most stunning road in the uk.

Just come back from annual pilgrimage of the distilleries
