How long are people getting from UJs? My front prop was changed about a year ago and rear one six months earlier. Now at least one of the UJs on the rear has gone again. It's not been off road more than a few miles of laning and its only covered 8000 miles. Doesn't seem like a lot to me.

The rear one was fitted just prior to me getting it by a Landrover specialist so I can only assume it was fitted correctly but I wasn't there so wouldn't bet my pension on it..... I'm not sure if it was a cheap pattern one or not as I don't have the receipt to hand at the moment. I've changed the front one just after I got it and used a genuine one.

Hmm. I've been a bit disappointed too. When I bought my Defender in mid 2012 the dealer fitted a new (Britpart, sadly) rear propshaft to help cure some vibration. By November 2013 the joint next to the handbrake drum was very loose. I swapped it for another (non Britpart) one and have installed new joints in the old one so as to swap over as soon as it's necessary. but I'd have hoped for a longer joint life than that.

How often do you grease them, and do you do it thoroughly?

Mines done 95K and still has the original UJs front and rear. They get a good greasing with moly every year when I do the service.
Cheers Mike.

Lack of grease will kill prop UJs in very short order. The trouble is that the centrifugal forces throw the grease out and then they run dry. I grease my nipples  at least once a year but as a rule when I do an oil and filter change. Still had an OEM UJ break up on me earlier in the year despite that though.
