Hi guys

got recovered today on the motorway:eek:

lost most power and massive judders coming from the engine, not sure what this could be as still quite a newbie when it comes to fixing me landy.

I've checked the air filter - no sign of oil/liquid of any kind

no odd coloured smoke from exhaust

could it be a blocked injector? anu other ideas?

thanks guys

sorry guys,

What Landrover? defender 90
What engine? 300tdi
What did AA man think? turbo

What stage is it at now? on my drive

thanks

Turbo would give massive loss of power, usually **** out loads of oil into the engine first tho coz when the bearings go so does the seals, and then the blades go, into the engine.

If your engine is vibrating it sounds like its dropped a cylinder.

Will it start in the drive and run even, the turbo wont matter at idle, and listen for any noises like a push rod dropped out or something.

Take the pipes off the turbo and look at the blades both sides, they should be nice and smooth, in particular the edges, take a hold of the centre of the blade shaft and move it towards the casing. It will move but it must not be able to touch the casing, there will be oil in there but not exessive, if the seals had gone you would have seen it anyway.

If its running like a burst ball then crack off each of the injector pipes a bit in turn until it drops that cylinder out until you find the cylinder thats not running. Each time you crack the pipe off a cylinder will stop running and you will get a little squirt from the pipe.

I take it the fuel filters ok, you can screw it off and check the top, if its covered in loads of **** then that could be the problem.

Find the cylinder thats not running and get back to here.

The no. 1 injector isn't working and the valve is bent upwards? does this make any sense

F**K, taken off the sump and theres loads of smashed up bits in it....gonna take it to garage now, i'm a bit out of me depth..

I know he's gonna say new engine, any idea's on where to look for one? that will deliver?
refurbished seems an expensive route but don't mind if its worth it..

250 off ebay seems to be the going rate for a goodun - plus 75 quid for a good used hoist, a set of spanners and a days work and it'll be swopped

expect to pay a grand + to have a garage supply and fit

have a care now ... get someone who can recognise the bits in the sump to have a look.

Unless it's conrods or pistons, camfollowers or gears, then it may well be only something that is fixable.

It's no big deal to hoick the engine out and fix it.

I get the horrible feeling that the smashed up stuff is a dropped valve, probably destroyed the piston and head, any chance you could take a photo of the stuff. Or look up into the cylinder and see if the piston is still there.

You said that a valve was bent up in a post, perhaps it's not just bent up, the head may have broken off it, or the valve insert came out for some reason, but with all that damage there must have been something audible, and smoke. Usually they only bend the push rods tho, didnt happen to go through a big puddle did you.

But charlieY is right, what looks terminal to you might be trivial and fixable.

unfortunatly, I make make out a piston head as its whole, no gears but there is an impressive dent the sump, the size of a fist, where it must have landed

The fire service where I worked used to drive into water on a regular basis, causing similar damage. If the bore was not damaged then it was a piston and con rod, tough old engines diesels so they are.

Once the head is off you will have a better idea the extent of the damage and what caused it. But at this minute a whole piston detaching with or without part of the con rod aint good.

i flooded my old engine, bent a conron. Took the plugs out, spun it over, popped them back in, it ran. Kinda...

TOok the engine apart to find out what had happened, and the big end, cos with a bent con rod it wasn't lined up properly etc it hit the bottom of the bore taking a big chunk out of it. Bugger...
