Cheers guys, following advice given near the start of this thread purchased the Grabber AT2 and they are fantastic.

Tram-lining has stopped, grip is huge and cost is so much lower. there is no increase in noise and it all appears much happier on the road.

Also does add a large amount of chunky style to the wheels.

I have found that it really MAKES NO DIFFERENCE what "Make" of tyres you use.

The last lot I got were made by some "Never Heard of" company ..Way out East..... On digging deeper I find that this "Never Heard of" company is actually a subsiduary of Pirelli.

In other words these tyres were made by the SAME people on the SAME machines & Quality checked by the SAME guys from Pirelli that would be checking/making the Scorpion range FOR PIRELLI

I fitted cheapo eastern tires (Roadstone or something like that) to my wifes Prius as I thought we needed to sell it due to the imminent arrival of offspring number 3 - time to join the MPV brigade:rolleyes:. The Continentals on it were worn down beyond the legal limit but they still gripped waaay better than the crappy tires I put on wet or dry:eek:.

Anyway while herself was in hospital I did a bit of bodging and managed to get the 3 baby seats to fit in the back of the Prius (I kid you not, there is a sheet of 1/2 inch ply across the back seat bench to make the seats fit!) so we've decided to keep it (It's her car and she really loves it, it's also incredibly cheap to run:p). Trouble now is I'm facing the winter on crap tires:doh:. I'm seriously thinking of putting 2 new good ones again on the front.

What Car did a brake test this month comparing cheap no-name tires to Goodyear, Michelin etc. The cheapos did reasonably ok in the dry but the best (michelin pilot) beat the worst (Sunew) by a whopping 30% in the wet (60ft v 82ft stopping distance from 70mph). Thats a serious amount of stopping power to give up for the sake of a few quid and my own experience backs it up so thats the end of cheapos for me.

And I bet the test wasn't in a 2.5ton car

Last winter I put a pair of Toyo Open Country A/T's on my P38. Grip on snow and sheet Ice, up hill and down hill exceeded all of my expectations. Tread pattern is similar to the Scorpion ST. Its a Japanese Tyre and reasonably priced compared to other quality tyres.
So far seems to be long lasting. Good off road and good on road with no noticable tram lining. May be slightly more road noise but not enough to stop me buying them again.

Daughter put crappy tyres (Nankang or some crap) on her ST170, I drove it and it was dangerous so ordered goodyear tyres for it, pity I went offshore that day but will get them fitted when I get home. Had Michelins on my Alfa GT and it was all over the road so changed them for Dunlops and that transformed it. Bought a set of Disco 3 wheels (235 x 70 x 17) with brand new cooper ATRs for the P38, I just hope they are alright for a general winter tyre-will find out soon enough. Last year had Dunlop grand trek AT 2 tyres on my Pajero and they were awsome in the snow.
Cheers

Yeah, last month I took off the korean crap front tires from the wifes Prius and put on Cooper Zeon CS6. Not that expensive and vastly better wet and dry. Have to wait and see about wear but at least I've confidence in the wet again.

As for the Coopers 4x4, I think they are under rated. I had ATR's on my RRC and thought they were a great tire, couldn't get them for the P38 though so I'm going for the Toyo Open Country next time out.

Thanks for that, gives me more confidence in the Coopers, a note on this thread a mate of mine fitted Grabber AT tyres to his frontera and thinks they are good in all conditions except wet roads where he reckons they have no grip so he is going back to BFGs, other mate has Toyo's on his ML and thinks the world of them. I had Toyo's on the Pajero before I fitted the Dunlops and thought they were a great road tyre.
Cheers

as an update to this thread. general at2 tyres are to be discontinued. {big mistake in my opinion} the replacement is simply called the at. however having seen this tyre it looks to be a very worthy replacement. general recon its to comply with the new eu directive on noise. i wonder if they will last as long as at2s .
[call me a cynic if you like] time will tell, once we get reports from our customers. i will try to post a picture when i get time.

Lots of strange makes of tyres about these days, I had Hankook on my Galloper/Pajero, very long lasting and not bad in the wet, better than the Goodyear Wranglers on my P38 in the snow. Don't think they make 255/60 18's though.

anyone tempted by or got Yokohama W Drive winter tyres?

not sure what to do with mine next, i like having matching tyres but if 2 are nearly new its a bit of an expensive ocd habbit! also would they stick the summer?

just an update for anyone that searches for tyre information.

I bought a set of Continental Cross Contact UHP's that have gone onto the front and have to say I am extremely pleased over the original pirelli tyres. There has been a complete reduction in tramlining, the noise is reduced and in the recent heavy rain and sitting water they have cleared the water no problem, I have only planed once and that was hitting a deep puddle at about 40 and it was steady as a rock.

really do recommend them, have been impressed with continental tyres twice now.

I fitted new Pirelli str to the front of my p 38 and after 15000 miles one developed a blister on the side wall and the other was nearly down to the legal limit. Had them Replaced in Macedonia with Hankook tyres and it improved the handeling. the other tyres on the car were Toyo open road which i dont know how many miles they had done'.
now i have done 15000 on the Hankooks and they are about half worn and the toyos seem to still have some life left in them.
I think Pirelli must have been practicing making tyres for formula 1 where they only have to last 1 hour befor replacement

afternoon all,
I have just replaced the 2 goodyears on the front with Michelin Pilot HXMXM4's. First impression is great as it is quiter. These are by far a road rather than a "do it all" tyre. I will update after a few thousands miles.
I got 25,000 miles out of the goodyears, is this good or bad??

General grabbers.
Better than wranglers.
And the pirrelis are ****ing ****e.
Had all off them 3 tyre choices
Generals are awesome and last forever.
24 k out of existing set and still got more than half tread left

Agreed. Went down a lane last weekend, had deep sand warning sign at the enterance, but so easy on GG AT2's. :D

Can anyone report on whether the Grabber AT is as good as the AT2? Also Uniroyal 4x4 street get good reports, anyone running their P38 on these?

at the moment all i can say is that the treadwear index is 100 lower on the at compared to the at2, suggesting that they may well grip better on the road, but will wear out quicker.:scratching_chin:
