hello

I’m planning on using the defender for camping trips so will be doing long journeys and motorway miles.

I currently have 16 ins steel wheels with off road tyres so want another set of wheels and tyres for the long distance.

Can anyone reccomend?

Thanks

I had a set of BF Goodrich AT’s on my disco 1 which after 30k were only around a third worn. On road they were very good and likewise off road, albeit only an All Terrain tyre.

Yes, I've done 80,000 miles on BF Goodrich All Terrains and they seem to be alright. Not too noisy or thirsty when you're keeping up with motorway traffic but with a bit of grip for when you meet mud and snow. I had some new ones fitted in 2016 which are coming up to 3 years old and I've barely even worn the moulding pips off them.

Another vote for bfg at's. I am now half way through my second set of them. Got 95k out of my first set and sold them on with 4mm of tread. Second set have now done about 60k and are probably half worn. both sets 265/75/16 fitted to 8"modular rims. I have no probalem with long journeys with them, I did 1500 miles in 36 hours to get to Morocco with no problems. They have good road handleing and are quiet.

Although people have complained they are noisy, I have a 200tdi in an old 110 and do not notice any tyre noise form them. Similarly I have never had any problems with handling whist others have previously complained about in the wet, but again it is a land rover, and is driven as such. If they were fitted to a modern land rover or jap pickup/4x4 that was driven like a sports car it may be a different story, but you cannot drive an old 110 like that!

My first set were part-worn when I got them and were a bit slippery on wet roads. It was quite easy to get the front end to break away on wet roads, if you were braking and going round a corner at the same time. The new set seem much stickier and you can throw the car around with greater confidence.
