I know the question has probably been asked before but I’ve looked back through the forum and can’t find the answer that I need.

What tyres?
I have an ’06 TD4 Adventurer that needs new shoes.
I’ve previously had 2 Discoveries and had BFG AT T/As fitted to both vehicles.
Very pleased with them on and off road and they never seemed to wear out.

I was thinking of fitting BFG ATs to my Freelander.
It’s currently wearing 215/65R16s do I swap for this size or go slightly larger for 225/70R16s. They only 10mm wider and I’ve worked out it’ll be around 17mm higher. The wheel arches should be able to cope.

Couple of questions come to mind, road noise and MPG, will these increase?

Is anyone else running these tyres or can you suggest an alternative.

Well thanks for that guys.

I've just joined the forum and I ask a question about 16" BFG ATs and get 6 really useful (not) replies.

1 picture of 15" muds
2 the ramblings of a country boy
3 ?
4 ?
5 ?
6 another picture of a tyre that's not an AT

Anyone on the forum that can help.

I'm just about to put a set of general AT's on my freelander, I am sticking with the standard size of 215/65/16.
Is there any desperate need for the extra 10mm width and 17mm higher? (looks better/free tyres/works better off road etc)

How much are you getting quoted for the BFG's? I've been given £100 a corner fitted for the Generals.

Hi mate. I went with 215/80/15 on mine. Got the falken at on mine. Got them fro
Camskill for about 250 quid for 5 last year. But I would have gone for Bfgs if I had a bottomless pocket :)

I keep getting told size doesn't matter:D
I was just thinking a little bit more can't hurt. It's only a small amount but more rubber on the road has to be an advantage and off road the little extra height may make a difference.
I've had a look at Generals and I'm not sure they do them in 225/70, I've heard they're a bit softer than BFGs, an advantage on the road surely, and last just as well.
The advantage of BFGs is 3 ply against 2 ply for Grabbers.
As I said I had BFGs on two previous Discoveries and was just wondering about the Freelander.

The cheapest for BFGs is around 130 quid, I'm sure I could get some sort of deal for 5 tyres if I tried.

It's going to be a couple of weeks yet so let us know how you get with the Grabbers.

Sure, I just need too:
Replace the CV boots,
Replace the brake drums
Replace the back box
Get the timing sorted properly
Get it MOT'd

then get some miles on it and I'll let you know :)

Plus a load of other stuff that I have probably forgotten.

Although, in your post, you ask:

Is anyone else running these tyres or can you suggest an alternative.

I suggest some other tyres, as an alternative. Whats the problem?

I think you should get a set of 235/70/R16 goodyear A/Ts. With regard to what to put them on, you should put them on a Defender and shift the Gaylander once and for all!
:D

Hi there mrmoonie,

I'm pretty sure that 225/70 16s will not fit. The edge of the tread will probably foul the front suspension strut bottom spring cup.

I'm running 235/55 17s - but they fit as the edge of the tread is below the spring cup. Clearance must be allowed for the tyre to flex on hard cornering.

No problem with wheel arch clearance.

If 225/70 did fit the mpg could well go up - but performance will drop.

225/70 16 are more than 5% bigger in circumference than 215/65 16

When your speedo reads 70mph you will actually be doing about 74mph so caution needed with the speed cameras etc.

Personally I wouldn't go that big - stick with the 215/65 16 size - or go a little wider if you want - but don't go higher.

Caio,

Singvogel.

Ignore the tratter boys. They're unhappy with their damp rusty biscuit tins so they come in ere to pick on Freelander and their owners. If yer can't feel good about yer own vehicle, diss someone else’s...

I've got general grabber at2's. There's a later version which is quieter and said to be better. My tyres make more noise on road than normal road tyres. Rougher tread pattern tyres create more vibration at speed. If you change the size of your tyres you'll change the gearing.

I have seen Hankook RF10's cheap. Are these cheap for a reason? or does anyone else use them?

Ah well, I bought a pair so I will tell you what I think soon.
