Probably discussed to death already but I wonder if I might tap into the experience out there. I want to put a set of mud terrain tyres on a 90 which is lifted but will be doing predominantly road mileage. I knoe people will be screaming "WHY" but I want to keep the overall look of ruggedness and I like the look and am aware of the sacrifices as I have driven on road with Simex tyres. Anyway what I would like to know is what would people advise to go for between 315/75 R16 or something like a 295/75 R16. What are most people running and what would be best to go for.

If you are looking for oversized what size rims for you have as that will affect the width you can fit. And how much of a lift as that will effect the overall diameter.

My daily at stock height runs 265/75/16. On 8” wide rims.
When I had a 4” suspension lift I was running 35/12.5/15 on 10” wide rims.

But the width of the rim determines the width of the tyre.

Never heard of a 295. Do you mean 285?

Personally I’d say 315 is too wide. But it depends what you actually want to achieve.

Big wide tyres are generally worse on fuel, more bump steer. And may cause more steering issues in general. Taller tyres impact gearing and braking. And to a certain extent handling will be worse. Although dry tarmac grip may improve up to a point.

What sort of engine, power and gearing do you have? And what sort of rims (width/offset) do you plan to use.

Wide tyres will stick outside standard arches which is illegal in the U.K. (Construction & Use Regs). Plus you’ll have **** all steering lock making it an ocean liner to park or turn around in.

As a rule in the U.K. most off road situations narrow tyres will work better than fat ones.

Also note that you run the risk of breaking axles and diffs with bigger tyres.

The standard 235/85R16 is still a great choice tbh. 285/75R16 is ok, but too fat really. 255/85R16 is a great size. But very limited choices in treads.

Or you could go to 15” rims. I’m running 33.10.50R15’s. But they would be better if they where narrower if honest. If I’m doing anything serious off road I normally put a set of 7.00 x 16’s on!
 
The fatter the tyre, the less lock you will have, looks are great but shti steering lock will soon pee you off big time.
 
265/75r16 insa ranger all terrain is what I run , no road noise at all and good price
