Hi, I have a problem with a tyre.
Basically, i have a set of genral grabber AT2's on my freelander, had them on a while now. the front have prob about 4 -4.5mm of treat left and the rear about 6.5 - 7mm of tread. The car has just been for its MOT and failed as there is a screw through one of the front very close to side wall. I've been told that it wouldn't be a good idea to replace one front tyre with out doing the other as it can cause probs with the VCU (if i've remembered that right). I have found a winter tyre on e-bay with 5mm of tread on it, would this be OK to use?? Any advice would be fab. Many thanks. Chris

Last time this happened to me I had it repaired by a professional tyre company that were licensed to carry out such a repair as they could re-vulcanise the tyre after the repair.

Try a search.

a screw in the tred can be repasired but not in the side wall that is a no no thats why people slash tyres on the side walls to make you pay out

Yer, I asked the garage if it could be repaired but they said no, to close to side wall. Just don't really have the money to get 2 new AT2's at the mo hence why i'm looking at a cheap nasty part worn on e-bay for now. Just don't wanna do my car damage by going down this route. :)

Grabber AT2's have been out of stock for a while now. I struggled to replace one some time ago. If your treads are getting low then you might as well go for a new set of tyres. Even if you fix this tyre you may have to do the same again. I know it's a bit of a pig but it's how life goes.

Can you tell me how hot yer vcu is after a drive? Thanks.

as far as i am aware a nail or screw in the tyre is not a mot fail only advisory, but the tyre still needs fixing,it can be done even close to the sidewall by a proper tyre repair/fitter

I couldn't find a 'proper' vulcaniser in NE Scotland for a puncture near the tread edge on a tyre that had done less than 300 miles.

The greedy bar-stewards all condemned the tyre and wanted to sell me a new one.

I took it with me on a trip to Germany and the first place I tried (in Aachen) fixed it for me as a matter of routine.

That was 30K miles ago.

SV.
