Tyre Dilemma

Hi

I currently have 3 BFGoodrich M/T's (one of which needs replacing), 1 BFGoodrich A/T and a road tyre as spare and am looking to replace both the road spare and 1 poor M/T.

I am not sure whether to:

1) Buy 2 M/T's - advantages being will then have 4 matching tyres on car and the A/T as a spare. Disadvantage - Noisey, worse fuel economy and when will I ever use up the A/T to get a full set; or

2) Buy 2 A/T's and run two on rear and 2 old M/T's on front and old A/T as spare - advantage being once M/T's worn out will be able to replace with A/T's and have a complete set. Disadvantage - running odd tyres (any safety issues re: this (or if not advice on which is best to have front vs back0 - also reduced 'off road' capability?

Disco came with tyres as above, I use it mostly on the road but plan to take it either to Morrocco or Eastern Europe but as good as the M/T's look Isuspect the A/T's would be more than be adequate for anything I am likely to get up to. Would also like to get into green laning/ off-road days.

Any advice would be much appreciated (at the moment I am erring towards the A/T's).

Hi there, I did Morocco last year on std road tyres, not even AT's. When I got back I put AT²'s on both our Disco's and loved them.

We did some quite challenging mud stuff in hers and the AT²'s coped brilliantly - and they are supposed to deliver legendary mileage !!!

They are great on-road as well.

I also love BFG AT's, third set now and they are ace. I swap them at 20000ish and last lot sold on ebay for ~£250 ... they still had 6-8mm tread, but were rounded off at edges and a bit 'iffy' off-road, which offsets the £400 new price ..

However ...

In your situation I'd suggest 2 new MT's on the rear with the AT as spare so you have a full set of MT's ... Then when they've worn a bit flog 'em off on ebay and get a full set of new AT's.

I replace mine as full sets, I believe skimping and running different tyres on a vehicle gives some potential (notalot admittedly, but some) for problems or handling issues, and as they're my only contact with the road I want them as good as I can get them.

PS: I have a very worn, but legal, different sized (smaller diameter and thinner) road tyre as a spare .. I see it as relatively unimportant as it's only the same as an emergency 'get-u-home space-saver' type of tyre, if it's needed, keep speed down and take my time ..

I wouldn't be too keen to drive around with mis-matched tyres on the same axle.

go straight to the BGF AT's - I really don't think MT's are worth the grief if your using the car on the road for long distances. I lane with AT's all round and have yet to find much they won't cope with - also the milage from them is truely awe inspiring.

Agree wiv that totally^^

I've just swapped Macho Greenaways M/T for BF Goodrich A/T's, and granted the Machos are retreads and pretty ****e, but they ain't bad off road in the thick stuff. Went fairly heavy green-laning on the BFG's and they are superb, went everywhere the Defenders did and they was running aggressive M/T's.

Excellent on-road as well, and look the bollix ta boot

I really don't think I will ever go for annuver tyre now, and IMO 245/75/16 seems to be optimal size wiv a 2" lift, gives plenty of arch clearance and decent tyre width, but thats just personal preference.

Go BFG A/T's you won't regret it.
