OK so here I am, been out with you landy types a couple of times and am coming to realise that a decent set of tyres may help.

So... bearing in mind that I am only laning... no serious off roading or vehicle destruction planned here... what's the best tyre that is still road legal, for me to get fitted to my motor.?

Even though its not a landie

Cheers

I run BFG mud terrains on both my Range Rovers & Defender now for three & four sets on each. I clock up a fair mileage on both sets of tyres and get fairly good wear at around 60,000 on each with enough tread left after this although I replace around this mileage.

I find they are fine on road, handle the wet well and corners and aren't as noisy as some make them out to be.

All my mates now run them and are quite happy with the overall performance and extra safety factor in all off road conditions...even after doing a 4000km run through the Simpson Desert in Australia...they were marvelous at 20psi for the majority of the sand dunes all 2000 odd off them after a double crossing.

Great in mud, & never fail to claw their way up rocky escarpments and rough tracks around home.

I will never go back to A/T type tyres again.

Hope this helps.

I do a fair bit of greenlaning in my 90. 75% of this is on road tyres, and I only swap to my BFGs over the winter.

I love BFG ATs as they don't compromise road handling or noise, and last forever. I have a set of BFG MTs but wish I hadn't bothered - fine for the gloppy stuff and rock, but allround not as good as the ATs.

My tuppence worth ...

It depends how quiet inside your shogun is
The BFG MT get noisy over 60 and I have to turn the radio up quite abit at 70+ but I drive a V8 110, the defenders with the diesels dont notice :D
The AT are quite a bit quieter, and laning dont cut it up so much , if you need more than that you should not really be on the lane JMHO

all terrain tyre ?
there is no such thing
its either a mud tyre or a road tyre . how can you have both . bfg ats are fine in the dry but block up in surface field mud ( seen it happen in damp grass) as they dont have a cleaning pattern .
the bfg mts are great self cleaners but where hard on the road ( still one of the best for a mt tho ) . but just for lanes the ats i reckon are the ones .

however consider some g90s or michelin xzls /xcls they are all great off road ( g90 especially ) and can be picked up relativly cheap for a part worn tyre .

Yup BFG muds are superb off the tarmac. I've got em on my 110 and I've been in some proper gloopy stuff that's been churned up by a tractor and 5 horses over the last few weeks, Got me through no trouble at all. They're a bit **** on wet tarmac imo but only under serious emergency stop conditions. As said above the noise isn't a problem in a diesel Land Rover.

I do like the BF's but if you want something diff and a little cheaper take a look at the cooper STT (MT) or the ST (between AT and MT) :) they both have had good reviews.

Many thanks for your observations and advice. BFG MTs seem to come out tops so I guess I'll give them a try first off.
