Two quickies!

1. How does the clock on my disco N reg 300tdi illuminate. Can never tell the time after dark!!!

2. My dad would like me to move his caravan approx 200 miles. Im not sure of the kerbweights/noseweights etc but suffice to say the caravan weighs 1300kg. Will i have any problems?

2) Nose weight is normally between 75-100kg (not above 150kg) but it does depend on caravan. go on-line to caravan manufacturers site or phone caravan centre for advice.
You could pull up to 3000kg (braked) so your well inside limit

At a guess on the clock, there might be a bulb in the back that illuminates when the lights are turned on.

With the caravan, the weight of the caravan should not be more than that of the tow vehicle. I tow my 1400kg caravan with my TD5 with no problems so you will be fine. Just make sure that anything heavy is placed low down and over the axle of the caravan.

I know i've already mentioned this to one of joules posts, but i just wanted bring it to your attention incase you didn't see it.

If you pass you test after Jan 97 then you'll need to do a trailer test, it's all abit confusin, they say your trailer and tow car can have a combined weight of upto 3500kg after that you have to do the test. if you need more info have a look on dvla site. i think there was anouther combination that you can't exceed but can't remember without looking.

Just don't want anyone to get caught out by this, as it's not well advertised and the penalty is pretty hefty!!!!

I have recently changed the bulb on my 300Tdi clock - It's reasonably straight forward. You will need to carefully prise the clock face from the dash, it did this with a screwdriver and went round the facia easing it out. you need to be carefull not to go too mad and break the retaining clips. Once you have popped it out, you will see the bulb. The new one cost me a couple of quid from my local Indy dealer.It's an easy enough job to be honest - just be carefull. The best way to get the clock out is to push a credit card into the top as far as it will go and just pull the clock out, hope this helps.

The right way to fit a bulb in the clock is to remove the ash tray and the hazard light switch (both pop out quite easily) and then you will see 3 screws
behind where the ash tray was and 3 screws behind where the hazard light switch was remove all 6 and the drinks tray will come out. now if you look under the clock you will see two small plastic catches, if pry those slightly and together the clock will come out. the bulb in the back in a plastic holder which is part of the bulb assembly. bulb and assembly cost aprox. £1.50 Beni.

Thanks for the advice so far. Caravan has been moved and the disco towed it like a dream although I was surprised at the rate the fuel guage went down!

As for the clock...i have had a look behind it and it appears that the bulb and its housing are missing??? all there is.. are some marks at the back, circular which looks like where the bulb or housing twisted onto the back of the clock unit. looks like I will just be driving without a clock after dark???

I actualy gave you wrong information, when I said remove hazard light switch,
I only noticed this morning that I should have said the fog lamp switch and housing. The bulb and its holder are a unit and you can get those from a good car accessory shop. sorry to have misled you. good luck. Beni

That may be the right way to do it but the credit card trick is far quicker and easier.

Fair comment Floyd, its just that I have fitted a bulb my way and it was quite easy. Next time it needs one I will try it your way, Im always up for easier methods if I cant damage anything. Beni

I have the same problem with my clock but no way am I going to take all the gubbins out if i can do it with my flexible friend
