Hello,

I purchased a 2002 Range Rover 4.4 v8 (LPG) two weeks ago and have a coupled of issues with it.

Engine Light

The engine warning light shows and sometimes flashes through general usage but mainly when the car changes to LPG. I was told this was due to the CO2 emission change when changing from petrol to LPG? My main concern is that one day there will be an issue with my engine but I won't know about it due to the engine light permanently being on

Does anyone know how this can be resolved?

Brakes

When buying the car I was told new disks and pads would be put on the car as the current ones were really worn. I'm not sure if the disks put on were cheap or it's just my imagination, but the brakes are not what I'd expected from a car like this?
I'm fully aware the Range Rover is a heavy old thing but it seems to me it takes ages to stop the car, and on several occasions thought I was going to hit the car in front of me due to the time it seems to take for the car to stop and the pressure I need to place on the pedal  I've driven a lot of cars in my time big and small and have to say the brakes on this car are the worst I have ever used!!

Your thoughts ?

Thanks in advance :)

Mate you have been had........I see a guy buy a audi a3 3.2v6 with engine light on and it had slipped the timming chain. total bill 3k!!

you cant run these on a shoe string:doh::doh:

see the link in my signature and call them first-then armed with your rights take it back

Fanatic,

When you say take it back, are you thinking more to do with the brakes issues or the engine light? If I get several reply posts stating the engine light is common on LPG conversions I'll have to live with it, I also wanted to get peoples oppinions on their brakes before I take it back to the garage?

Thanks

Cheers

If you need to throw an anchor out the back to stop they are dangerous. Engine light as well sounds like you don't want to own a dog
Phone consumer direct, they will explain your rights and then you can go armed with information back to dealer

bang on. they weigh 2half ton but the brakes have to be upto the job. Even sold as seen has no standing anymore. "not fit for purpose"

Further to this a good LPG conversion should not bring on engine light as gas ecu should provide feedback to fool engine ecu.

So either it has a fault on conversion and or a crap conversion

Where are you?

suggest you post on fullfatrr.com. they have a lot of experience and I know several have LPG on a 4.4 V8 so you will get first rate info.

Or I can point you to an associate that does cooper factory lpg conversions, but really you need to get dealer to fix for free as they are legally obliged to

Fanatic,

I'm based in Kent and purchased the car from Saxton 4x4 in Essex with 6 months warranty. I was informed the engine light is common on LPG conversions and I'd have to live with it..... nothing they can do!!!
I think I'll take the car to an LPG specialist and ask them there thoughts on the engine light, get them to fix it, then invoice Saxton.

The last thing I want to do is take the car back I love it, and have been saving for years to buy one and now live my dream :( sort of!!!!

I'll have a search on the net for LPG companies and contact them for advise..
I think i'll go back to Saxton regarding the brakes though as they are not very good!

Thanks for all your advise guys its appreciated :clap2:

i would take the car back to saxton4x4 and ask them to sort the brakes if as you say they are not up to par they should fix them, i don't think they are a autogas centre so woudn't be able to sort the gas problem (you really need to be an autogas tech to work on the systems) but they may refer you to an lpg specialist who can do work on behalf of them

Brakes could be something as simple as having not been properly bleeded when they changed the discs and pads (if they disconected and then reconnected the calipers, letting air in). Is there alot of travel in the brake pedal or is it quite firm? But I would have thought that a 4x4 dealer wouldn't make such a simple error.

How much brakign have you been doing? Could also be that the brakes just need wearing in a bit, to get the pad surface a bit rougher. Usually people changed front and back brakes suff at different times so that you dont' have all 4 corners with brand new pad/discs.

As for engine light, I have no idea, don't know enough about such things to comment.

try tinley for lpg advice

but you will need to know the make and model of your system,,,

it dont sound right to me... never had that problem with my lpg system,, theres also an lpg forum on the net..

as for the brakes im with fanatic... take it back quoting the sale of goods and services act.. if they say no. give them a prepared letter detailing your vehicles faults and their refusal to fix them, head the letter, LETTER BEFORE ACTION. keep a copy and then visit the local trading standards agency or your solicitor.. by your posts i presume you have spent a fair few quid on this car and dont want to throw your money away.

by doing this you have nothing to loose and everything to gain, remeber its your rights as a consumer,, it dont matter if its a loaf of bread or a car if it aint fit for purpose take it back

Saxton!!?? WTF? I reckon you've more chance of getting Osama Bin Laden's home address than getting them to deal with this satisfactorily. I'd be very interested (and surprised) if you get any joy from them. look at Saxton 4x4, Brentwood, Essex Car Dealers Reviews | Car Dealers | Review Centre

It's interesting that all the 5 star positive comments were within 4 weeks of one another and used some pretty formal sales pitch terminology (largest stock of 4x4's in the UK etc... 3 April). Caveat emptor!

If they get ****ty then do what one of the customers did at a main dealer near where I used to work...........he parked his buggered vauxhall right up against the show room door so no one could get out and hung a sign at the back of the car saying dodgy dealer. locked up and refused to move it until they fixed it,:D:D;)
