Turbocharger replacement question

Hi lads,
Having a disasterous time with a ranger rover 03 hse 2.9D which I've bought about 5 months ago. Already cost me 2300 and having got it back 2 weeks ago i've had 2 good weeks driving before its after stopping again with loads of smoke out the exhaust.
Seems the turbocharger is gone now and I've got a quote for 2100 for that. I can get a second hand one but I'm hoping my brother in law can fix it but hes not familiar with range rovers and I need to know how big a job it is to replace. Would he need access to a pit? Does the engine have to come out or anything as radical as that? Could you do a job like this at home if ya had the right tools?

Pretty easy to get to the turbos on the td6 if I remember correctly
To the front left side of the engine

As I recall the turbo is mounted low in the engine bay so is easier to get to from the bottom.

No real special tools involved, just undo a few hoses, remove a few bolts. Replace gaskets (a lot of the time a small tab of clean oil or liquid gasket can hold them in place to make fitment easier) and refitting is the reverse of removal.

[edit: Just had a gander, appears to be at the top of the engine. Was thinking of my P38. Sillah me.]

No need for taking out engines or anything as complicated as that so? Hes a truck mechanic and would have most tools at home but obviously no pit or anything that big.

It has the removal procedure in that....under the Engine Management Section of all places...

Make sure its the turbo and not a split hose , if it is the turbo check oil feed pipe to it isn't leaking and caused the Failure.

PCV valve blocked?

Also be worth checking the zorts. A chap here had his turbo fail because the zorts failed which dumped all sorts of crud into the turbo.
