turbo recon - who has done it ?

Au contraire, the kits are widely available from Garret (the makers) amongst others and are often serviced by competent persons....they wouldnt be supplying the parts unless they were satisfied that people could do the job,for litigation reasons if no other. The parts you are referring to and the balance thereof does not necessarily come into the overhaul of seals etc. Several of the more experienced members of this forum have done the job many times and I am interested in their comments on what particularly to look out for.

But please dont take that personally,its not meant so. It is a common misconception,like alternators not being a straightforward repair. Thanks for taking the time to reply and for your concern for my welfare.

Yes James, I have ! Because I wasnt getting replies to the older one ! In fact 3 because I just put one on the 300tdi section as well !

Sourcing parts is no problem, I have them queuing up, but I am interested to know what people have found when they open the turbos up,what to look out for,etc.

If I get some people jump on board I will kill off the other threads. You had already told me that the spare unit I have is most like OK to put on but I will be wanting to overhaul the one that comes off,plus others in the future.

No, I have your post on assessing the spare unit, thank you. Put my mind at rest for a scant moment before the next crisis appeared !

Seriously though,thanks.Do you have anything to say on the recon itself ? I had an idea that you had done some....I know that CharlseY has.....you dont want him getting one up on you...do you?

:rolleyes::D:D:D:D

I did that some time ago for a Ford Scorpio turbo unit ... you should be very meticulous, also get a box of strong toothpicks to avoid scratching things when cleaning, time and patience also if you can get them in a bottle

Thanks mate,good input.I shall probably fashion some wood tools and machine some ABSnylon picks and levers, you got me thinking !Clean,non disturbed space is always the problem....I have a load of army surplus patience in the shed that I got cheap years ago,been waiting for a reason to use it......

remember that the rotating parts have been balanced, put some marks to remember orientation later, also to balance the bolt it is often ground on one side or a small dent has been sawed ... if you mark by scratching you should be very light handed and put your mark as close as possible from the axle, it turns in the 150 - 200.000 rpm area
