Once again I need advice from you great sponges of knowledge.
I have a 2.5 td 19j engine in my 90 and am pretty sure that the turbo oil seals are on the way out.:(
I have read all the threads and done all the other tests like the last one POS said with the dipstick tube (there was no spitting of oil or pressure build up).
I cannot afford £403.00 (Paddocks) for a new one and am worried about buying a secondhand one from fleabay in case it is in the same condition as mine.
Questions are, is it possible to obtain and do the oil seals myself ?
Can you get replacement recon ones from decent suppliers ?
Or does anyone have one for sale that they know is ok.
Many thanks in anticipation.

Morgey:)

just buy a complete engine orf ebay and have the turbo orf it

one went the other day fer about £50 - sell the starter/alt etc and weigh the rest of it in

The dipstick tube has fookall to do with a turbo, when the seals go it vomits large amounts of engine oil into the exhaust and the engine.

Even if you take the pipes off you will find traces of oil in them, and that is normal, but not flooded, giving the smoke you describe.

Usually when they go they just go, no real build up to it.

If there was pressure at the dipstick or breather or filler cap which was exessive then the engine is fooked.

You sure that this is clouds of oil and not fuel, I am sure I asked you this before, if it's as bad as you say then you must be pouring oil in it.

Take the turbo pipe off and run it round the block and see if it still smokes the same, it wont run worth a fook without turbo boost but it illiminates the turbo.

No you can't overhaul a turbo yourself, they are finely balanced and you can replace the parts but cant balance it, so it blows up.

Thanks for that, I will take the turbo tube off over the weekend and try that tip.
The reason I did the dipstick thing was to make sure that the problem was not a fooked engine. I have been out in the landy this morning towing the hot air balloon and this is what happens.
I drive 10 miles to the launch field and all is ok. Then i do a series of low rev manouvres such as reversing and 1st gear low ratio work.
Then park up for 20 minutes.
After the balloon is launched I drive across the field and as soon as I power the landy into 2 nd gear it gives a high rev, engine rattle with blue to black smoke for a couple of seconds or slightly more, I usually dip the clutch as a natural instinct then all is ok. until I am waiting in traffic or long periods of idling then It happens again. I think this means that I am getting small amounts of oil dripping into the turbo whilst idling then this is getting blown into the engine air intake as an additional fuel source. I will try what you said over the weekend though as this will as you say eliminate the turbo one way or another.

oooooooooh '
Quickly moving on I have just disconnected the blue soft 2" hose from the turbo to the air inlet manifold and driven around and reversed a bit.
Opened the bonnet and there is diesel dripping from the tube after doing these slow manouvres. Stop the engine and the dripping stops. The smoke I have been getting is obviously fuel smoke.
Help!!!! What is it and what caqn I do. Can I go ballooning again tonight?
