Hi Everyone. Hoping for a bit of advice on a turbo (I think) problem on FL2 2010. 2.2 TD4 E GS manual.
Noticed a couple of weeks ago that the car is stuttering at between 1500 and 2500 rpm when accelerating. If you put foot right down - grey smoke coming out. If you just ease through it (say 3/4 way down) it goes through it without the smoke but lacks power. It seems to be OK at higher speeds but overall seems sluggish.
I had a full service and MOT (passed no problem) just over a week ago. I asked garage to have a look at it but they didn't have time to do it as I needed it back the same day for a weekend away.
Any ideas on what it might be? I saw some threads on here where LR dealers wanted to fit a new turbo and it was just something much more simple and various stuff on youtube saying it could be split intercooler hose or to put a restrictor on the turbo oil inlet. Tbh, I haven't got a clue but obviously don't want to get ripped off when I bring it somewhere to be fixed.
Any thoughts / info / experiences would be good so that I can talk to the garage before committing to anything big or unnecessary.
Cheers

I wouldn't jump to the conclusion that it is the turbo - running well at higher speeds does not sound like a turbo problem. Grey smoke usually means that either the fuel/air mixture is well out of whack or there is a small amount of oil getting into the combustion chambers somehow. I don't know the FL2 well but on the FL1 you can get that smoke from a clogged up crankcase ventilation system.

Your symptoms sound like the engine is not getting enough air when you are demanding power from it so it could be that the high-pressure air from the turbo is getting out somewhere - split or loose intercooler hoses are a good suspect and fairly easy to check. Do you notice any whistling noises or are there any engine management lights on? Other suspects are the various sensors that measure air flow and pressure; possibly a fuel injector and possibly a stuck EGR valve.

Thanks for the reply Blodge.
Your comments are similar to some stuff on you tube I looked at also. There is an engine management light on now but didn't come on until a few days after it started. I don't have a code reader so its just the light to me. No whistling noises. I'll bring it in and ask them to have a look at the intercooler hoses and EGR etc.
Thanks again

I don't have a code reader
You can get a cheap reader Elm 327 and a free app for your phone , i have it for my freelander 1 and i know a few others have but i do not know if it would work with a F2 but i am sure some one will know

By law it should work on an F2 - but only for engine codes/data. Will need a LR bespoke reader to talk tot he rest of the car.

Thanks tlo and GrumpyGel.
Blodge, I had a look at the hoses and thanks to you for mentioning and you tube for showing me where it is, it looks 99% like a split intercooler hose. Its booked in for Friday. Hopefully that should fix it.

Just to let you all know. Finally fixed today. I was quoted £135 for a set of replacement hoses by LR main dealer. I opted to buy a new set (short one and the long one) of silicone hoses in blue for £65 + £2 per clamp (instead of jubilee clips which don't agree with silicone) from DPH sport. Fitted today by Autopro garage in Stockport for an hours labour. Good bunch of guys and garage has excellent feedback.
Car is running great again. No juddering at low revs and grey smoke is no longer there when accelerating.

Thanks again for input & suggestions - Blodge, Tlo and Grumpygel - a while back. :)
