Hi all,

I have a 2001 td5 defender with Td5 Alive stage 2 remap and TD5 Turbo Booster. I first noticed a problem when driving on a motorway and went to overtake a lorry doing around 65, 70mph. When a got to 70mph (2.5 bar turbo pressure) the turbo cut out.

If i take my foot off the accelerator the turbo will kick back in but only till around 2.5 bar then it cuts out again. This happens at high speed or on aggressive acceleration.

any ideas on this would be greatly appreciated!

Are you sure its 2.5 bar? That seems excessive.
When you say cut out do you lose all turbo pressure or does it just flatten out or tail off?
 
Sorry i mean't 1.5 bar. Dont no why i put 2.5 :doh: The pressure drops like a stone and its instant. But like i said if you take your foot off the accelerator it returns again.
 
The engine ECU has recognised an overboost situation and gone into limp mode where it is difficult to get a Td5 over 70mph.

Has anyone tampered with the turbo actuator at the front of the turbo unit? Count the threads you can see between the actuator and the nut. There should be about 12.

Have you got an Alive Tuning intercooler?
 
I'v got a Allisport intercooler. Just counted the threads and there's only 9 showing. Should i adjust it to 12?
 
When you lift the loud pedal you get turbo pressure back as per normal?
What happens then when you get back on it? Can you drive past 70 normally?
Limp mode will stay until you switch of the ignition and restart. Soon as it senses overboost it will kick back in again. Limp mode will only allow 0.75 bar or about 11 psi as the throttle is restricted by the ECU.
Maybe your turbo boost box is not working which would mean you will overboost at about 1 bar.
 
Wouldn't the engine management light come on if it was going into limp mode? As i let my foot off the throttle the pressure returns but when i put my foot down again it dumps it all again. I have tried WSLR advise and adjusted the turbo actuator so you can count 12 threads but its still dumping all pressure at 70mph.

Is there any way of testing the boost box? If i disconnected it would it course damage to anything?
 
No there is no visual indication that the ECU has activated limp mode other than an overboost error code stored in the log. You can tell if this is the case because the throttle response is much less for the same amount of pedal travel which is what limits the top speed.
The reason you apparently get the full turbo pressure back when you back off is purely because the engine is not demanding so much air and the manifold has no dump valve to vent excess boost pressure. I'd say you dont have a turbo problem as its obviously boosting. Do you have a boost gauge fitted? I'd try turning down the boost to about 12 psi and then start winding it up a turn at a time on the actuator arm until you encounter the problem. If it starts at about 16psi then your turbo boost box is not fooling the ECU which is responding as it is supposed to. If you disconnect the boost box you will need to reconnect the original manifold pressure wire as the TD5 Alive box feeds the boost pressure signal through its gubbins and then on to the ECU. I dont know what's inside the box as I've never taken one apart. Have you spoken to Gary at Alive?
 
Iv sent Alive an email but had no reply. Thanks a lot for your help! I shall give it a go and let you know the outcome.
 
sound like it is over boosting and cutting the fuel to bring the boost down, check the vacum pipes from the waste gate to the solinoid and from the solinoid to the inlet pipe this happen when one of these split or comes of, we get loads of these in.
 
I can't see anything wrong with the pipes and Iv spoken to Gary at TD5 alive. He has advised me not to adjust the turbo actuator because he set it when he calibrated the engine.

I have noticed that if i rev the engine flat out when stationery and the turbo dumps the pressure almost instantly not even getting to 1 bar.

Iv now ran a diagnostics test and its not coming up with and over boost error. But it is give a "Tachometer (Open Load)" error. Could this error be having an affect?

you have a tachometer open load fault cos you don't have one fitted. It has nothing to do with your turbo fault.
