Morning,

I've got a slightly confusing 'thing' happening with the 200tdi in my 90. Generally speaking from cold I find that I can hear the turbo spooling up / down and boosting much more clearly than I can once the engine has warmed up - lots of whistle / high pitch drone. I am also fairly certain that my engine pulls better when it is cold rather that warm / hot. I do have one theory based on the fact that oil will have thinned out considerably once the engine has warmed up, and therefore the turbo will be able to spin much more freely (so the sound I do hear could just be an air restriction and the extra power might just be a mental thing) but I am still convinced that it works harder from cold, it certainly makes a lot more noise.

Any ideas on what might be causing it to back off a little when it's warmed up? The waste gate seems to be working properly.

Thanks

have you changed your oil recently? the bearing might be getting abit warn, have you checked it for play in the shaft? have you checked the intercooler isnt blocked? the intercooler will make the diffrence when its warm.
thats all i can think of..

The oil was changed about 3 months ago so that's nice and fresh. There is only a tiny amount of play in the spindle but it is definitely within the acceptable tolerances. The oil bearing collapses when the engine is off anyway so I'm pretty happy that the turbo is in good shape and there are no signs if the vanes scoring the compressor housing. The intercooler is nice and clean too, that got a steam clean and a paraffin flush at the same time that I changed the oil. Looks like we are stumped here! How bizarre. I'm beginning to wonder if the waste gate is playing tricks on me. I suppose it is possible that when the exhaust manifold heats up, it is somehow opening the waste gate slightly. I will tie it shut and see how it performs.

Cheers

check your hoses for leaks, when did you get it back?????//

The hoses are all in good shape, they were the first thing that I checked. It still has its power, it just feels a little more gutsy from cold and the turbo seems to do a he'll of a lot more whistling until it's warmed up. When you say when did I get it back, I take it that you a referring to the 90!? I bought it back off the bloke that I sold it to about 2 months after I got rid of it. It re-appeared on eBay (I was looking for it) and I gave him back what he paid for it. He had the rear cross member replaced and did a few other bits on it too, so it was basically just like he took it off my hands for a couple of months, did a load of work and then gave me it back. I've painted it NATO green and dropped a 200tdi in it since then :D

yeh could be the wastegate spring going weak or somehting when it getts hot.. it does sound as tho it could be wastegate related thinking about it.. it is an odd one!!

Maybe it just likes the cooler air

Even after it's been through the turbo, the air must be cooler than when the engine is up to full working temp, even though alot of the heat is from it being forced in.
