Need to tow a trailer next year which is fairly close to the limit of the freebie. Some of the caravan forums mention that a tuning box makes all the difference.

Reading around I like the look of the Synergy2 especially as I a suspicious about the MAF anyway, what have others found with this or the alternatives. Is it worth having the ECU remapped instead

Those that have used them whats the reaction they have got from the insurance companies.

03 Plate Td4

The maximum towing weight has less to do with the pulling power of the tow car, and more to do with maintaining control of the trailer, taking into account weight of towcar and braking ability. More power will always make towing more comfortable and effortless, but you also need to take these other factors into account, as well as the balance of the load over the trailer wheels, to get the nose weight right.

I'd go for the synergy2 myself. very highly regarded on here, and it simply plugs in. if there's any aggro with insurer's, it can be unplugged in minutes.

trouble with remapping is it's not easily reversable without the software which remapped it, and I think it leaves a footprint in the ecu.

only reason I haven't fitted one is £££, or rather lack of.

good luck with whatever path you choose.

Cough........just so happens that i have a Synergy 2 for sale that i only bought at the end of March but have now sold our Td4. £120 including the p+p.

Go for Chasers Synergy 2, it's a good deal & also get his egr bypass which I'm sure he'll sell for a reasonable price. Some insurers won't quote for the tuning chips while others are reasonable. I just yesterday arranged my insurance through Go Compare who listed Adrian Flux as the cheapest (by a huge amount). The quote came up at £307 but unfortunately when I was linked to the Flux website from go Compare the tuning modification although declared hadn't linked through. I called up Adrian Flux & explained & they came back with a revised quote of £333 which was a good £150 cheaper than anywhere else. So here I am with the synergy box declared & cheaper insurance compared to last year without the mod.
Go for it, the performance difference is really worth it.

EGR is a valve to recycle the exhaust gas back into the air inlet. IT tends to become clogged up and is basically a partial blockage in the natural air route. Bypass unit is the piece of pipe without EGR valve in place. It also has a piece to block the recycled exhaust gas that isnt used.

i got a better price from direct line than any other insurance co. with a syrenergy 2 fitted.

My insurance with Admiral, still waiting for a reply so I think the idea has blown their minds a bit! Didn't help that the numpty on the call desk patently knew nothing about cars and couldn't comprehend retuning a car electronically.

recently done a 3500 mile round trip towing 1900 kg caravan td4 had a synergy 2 fitted and egr bypass fitted power was brilliant but the van made it sellf known with the weight of it the car got dragged about a lot when over taking wagons and when you over do it with speed van will do just what it wants freelander just not heavy enough to make a serious towing car. x352xch has just been part exed all the kit still fitted hope it apears on here
