Out of interest - anyone know of a reasonably affordable suitable truck solution with 2-front, 2 back passenger config that also allows room in back to sleep?. Have seen the Azalai plus Nene's offerings but wondered if there are trucks out there with front and back seats already in place and not sectioned off in any way. Then with body behind for sleep/storage - most of what we see are 2-man cabs/ambulances.

are you looking to move away from LR Cassie?

better pose this question over on the HUBB. Unimog, Iveco, Pinzgauer MAN etc are all used and talked about on the forum. Might get more joy there.

Something like a 130 double cab with a demountable , or next step up is unimog doka , some used by german fire brigade that have suitable rear body for conversion . I converted a bedford RL by fitting a crewcab from an S series bedford fire engine and a then mounting a radio body behind that for a chap and his family to travel down to nigeria about 30 years ago .
You need to look for a crewcab vehicle pretty rare in 4wd , Mitsi canter do one. Mercedes also eg:
Mercedes Rundhauber Feuerwehr Oldtimer Kurzhauber bei eBay.de: (endet 14.10.09 15:04:48 MESZ)

This is a mitsi crewcab but not 4x4
mitsubishi canter crew cab recovery truck on eBay (end time 12-Oct-09 19:09:36 BST)

This a Nissan
Nissan cabstar crew cab tipper on eBay (end time 21-Oct-09 14:39:47 BST)
This a demountable body

You would need to build a rear body, or buy an ex mil radio body (they are usually quite cheap) , and then make a walk thru in rear of cab Is that what you are thinking maybe ?:)

B’lee - all good thanks. Will PM you guys shortly with piccies. When you in UK?

G - niggling deliberation (all in one rather than train, towing, shipping, parking etc.). Don’t want to move away from LR. Looked at stuff on Hubb, ebay, google – but ….

T- looking and re-looking, think sensible step up for us would be double cab truck solution with mountable body and step down would be 130. All info provided plus stuff we had already led us to look into all kinds of solutions. Looked at them all I think now. More definate about conclusion to stick with what we have. Major reasons – affordable, 4x4 & detach capability, onboard LR config (kids love), time/money. Probably repeating myself but just had these sudden doubts.

Even with time/money there is danger of ‘overgain’ & seems bigger trucks in weight would be virtually cost neutral in the grand scheme. Other issues – overall vehicle size? fuel consumption? (dependant) so possibly back to square one. Also, not quite same config on board as per LR without spending more. Doesn’t have to be but hard to trade. Maybe even more comfort in some cases. For us 130’s limiting but trucks could also be possibly limiting in some ways. So, truck remains sensible and tempting – definitely way to go (plus 'drool' factor) but affordability/time to get that spec right - ? Starts to get as personal as the LR – so we finally decided best left right now (if only the money and time to play).

Why didn’t we just buy a clapped out old banger for £50 – buy one in each country?

B'lee - meant to say - picture of that truck looks awesome - tempting.
Finally, decided we're sticking with LR - suppose was wondering if magic solution but would be at a cost of trading in LR and the smiles that go with it - we can't do it - well not yet. Maybe in our next life. Thanks all.

mmmmmm MAN KAT.

Get one Cassie :D

Does anyone else not feel that a truck that big limits your route/explore options? Yes I agree they look far more comfortable and easy to live with than my 90 with an RTT, but the shear size and weight of them limits what you can do.

Ad, how were the routes to Mongolia? tight, twisty? or more open easy going?

Im my limited experience, Most of the places in the Atlas mountains Morocco would have been impossible for anything bigger than a Pinz. Likewise with the Alps. I know these places can be bypassed on a longer journey say, but im all for exploring regions within countries. If you bypass the Atlas mountains, you may as well be driving a Merc through north Africa not hauling around a Unimog or MAN.

Just my personal preference for rough roads and exploring :) I just trucks suit some people more than others. (I would still love one though :D)

The general solution by those that seem to have found the same sort of problems is a quad or dirt bike carried in or slung on the back .
I met a german family that were touring Oz in 6x6 Man kat , in W.A. and they were having a problem finding a site that would take their rig , due its size , luckily I was able to help them out .
They said that they always asked if busses went to locations if they were not sure about access , on the assumption that if a bus could gain access so could they . They had a couple of dirt bikes so that mum and dad drove and the kids went pillion . He said the bike was good for getting spares, or recce on route . etc. The other problem was shipping , they had to go several hundred miles in India because they were too heavy for the port crane to load their vehicle onto the ship , unimog is about as big as you can go flat rack or container (take the wheels off and drive in on the brake discs) I had to get o/h container for my 110 .
I have fancied a 8x6 foden or daf big hook with a demountable on the back gives you alot of versatility

I saw a couple of demountable Unimogs in Morocco, very neat. Good solution if you use your vehicle for work etc.

Bikes, yes, a good solution to exploring maybe. Shipping will always be an issue with trucks this size, as will weak bridges and floating bridges/chain driven boats. May mean a few hundred mile detour to find a way around.

I just thing overall all these factors are too limiting to my aims/objectives when out driving.

...now, how can I fit a 125 to my 90 :D in a Sankey? ;)

The only problems i can see would be parking in ullan battor, the rest of it is one big open play ground, i would give my right arm to go back and have a play in a good sized truck!!!!!!
