Truck Cab vs. Hard Top?

I'm still on the lookout for "the right" Defender 90.

I hadn't really considered the truck cab until I saw one at Liveridge today.

Other than the bleeding obvious i.e. it doesn't have a roof, is there any inherent disadvantage to the truck cab over a hard top?

all mine have been truck cabs, the only down side is folk tend to lift things out yer back tub , and everythin gets wet

they do look nice tho



if yer need a hard back get a ifor williams back cover , like the ser 2 below, then yer can take it off fer the summer, same with a canvas hood

I've got a truck cab. I really love the visibility its gives me. I have a Tonneau cover and have fitted struts near the rear so it lifts like a boot. I also have an Ifor top I use when carrying surfboards long distances.

We normally travel the three of us (wife and 1 yr old) all together but I am toying with the idea of selling and getting a loan for a newer station wagon...

Steve-o...did you make that tub cover yourself or is there a supplier?

It was done by the guy previous to me. He was a good guy. He sprayed the truck too. I just added some runners and my struts so its permanent and secure. Its really simple to be honest. Its just a square of chequer plate slightly bigger than needed then bent over with welded corners so it fits.

I reckon there is a market for them to be honest!

i like that cover too, am tempted to make one as some times i only need a few spanners, a gas bottle and a few nuts and bolts to go to work with, so no need to put the ifor top on, as its a pain in the mornings, so will look in to making something similar one day

Hard Top for me - looks cool (ish) and functional. Truck Cab, looks cool but only partially functional at best. If you want a roof rack, a baby one on a truck cab is best you can get. So depends what tickles you

i made one out of 1 1/2" poles, welded together, full length of the 90, mounted in holes on front bumper and same at back , bigger than a 110 rack ideal fer ladders

im a fan of truck cabs myself i have 2 ,a 300tdi which is my daily driver and a 200 tdi which is my offroader.steve-o good idea that load cover is it hinged at the front

Not hinged. It just sits under the lip. I have wedged it with pipe lagging so it doesn't bounce about too much.

If people want me to I am happy to take a bunch of photos so you can fabricate one yourself.

I have found this website that sells ally covers. A bit pricey, but might last a tad longer than a DIY job.

Only downside to a truck cab over a van back is your eardrums

I converted a rag van to a rag truck top and love it. Tonneu cover keeps the load bay dry. Easy to forklift logs etc into it and for some reason a lot quieter, I guess because the noise of the rear transmission is now carried downwind rather than vibrating around. Canvass is obviously quiet as well and the heater works really well!!

Plus.....truck cabs heat up quicker in winter

Can hurt if you go to throw something in the back, tends to bounce off the rear window...took me a week or 2 to realise this....

i have a 300 tdi truck cab,i love it,not practical and i cant get the seat back far enough,but i wouldnt change it.
