hi,

i have recently bought my first discovery, which i love!

sometimes when i go to start it up, the ignition seems locked?

i have spoken to a friend that has discovery's and he confirmed that his 2 do it too??

anyone know what/why this happens?

thank you

Hi,

There are a few threads on here that deal with this problem, try doing a search.

Mine was the same until eventually, I was left stranded in a carpark and had to resort to a hammer and chisel to move the car again.

It could be a couple of things.

1 - the steering lock could be interfering, try moving the wheel side to side whilst turning the key,
2 (most likely) the lock barrel is getting worn.

If it's the barrel then it's a relatively simple task to pull apart and sharpen up the brass plates in the barrel. That should see you through for a while but the ultimate answer is to get a new barrel.

great, thank you.

i do try and move the wheel from side to side when it happens and it doesn't seem to help at all. so most likely it is the barrel then.

thank you for your help, much appreciated.

I have experienced this on different cars over the years....No. 1 from Stckybackbob is good, as is No.2 but on No. 2 my take on it (in addition to Stickybob) is that as the key and barrel are getting worn they deposit fine metal filings in the barrel gumming up the works and I have cured this on several occasions by a squirt of WD40 or dab of lubricating oil down the barrel at the same time as moving the key in and out.

Hope this helps.
Riggy.

riggy, great thank you - i will try the wd40 first, it has only done 64k miles, however i believe it has not been used much in the last 2 years!

Please do the search first before trying WD40.

The threads on here are 60/40 don't use WD as all it does is add a bit of lube but then holds all the filings Riggy talks about jamming up the barrel more.

Not knocking anyone or how they've fixed things in the past but ask a locksmith about how to lube a lock and it's never WD40. If it needs lube, try rubbing a soft pencil over it (the 'lead' is graphite).

thank you stickybackbob, i think i will get a landrover mechanic to give it a once over as i think it could do with a service anyway.
