Hi All,

Think I know the answer to this one, but can I get a confirmation before spending more.....

How tight should the ball joints on the track rod ends be? I can move mine easily by hand, which I don't think is a good sign :) (track rod is currently off the vehicle while replacing the axle - and bushes and drag link and shocks!!).

There is also a hint of grinding when moving them, which I reckon is the final death knoll for them.

Any opinions?

Cheers
Marc

If they feel rough and slack bin them mate ;)

Think you have answered your own questions. They should be secured with lock nuts and not be able to be turned by hand unless they've been slackened during the overhaul. Grinding noise in the balljoints is your 'two minute warning'. There may not be any lift in them which would be an MOT failure if 'excessive' but there soon will be. Not the dearest thing to replace but unless you do the job yourself you'll be another couple of hours labour dismantling things again which are already off now.

Cheers Guys

Thought that to be the case. Doing it myself and already have it all in pieces, so ideal time to do it, along with the all the other bits.

Can't hear grinding, but can feel a bit when wiggling the ball joints back and forward. New ones I've fitted in the past have always been quite tight to move around, these definitely aren't!!

Back to the Island of 4X4 again then :)

might as well do the drag link while you are under there and have no more worries, and the damper ;)

already got a drag link - that turned up today. not sure i'll get away with a damper with SWMBO, unless I go for ****part on one or both.

Was going to go for the lemforder track rod (same as drag link).

I think adding even just another £56+vat for the genuine damper right now wouldn't be worth the earache (already gone to £250 more than planned!!)

Easy enough to do the damper later though (she might get one for christmas :D)
