Bought a 51 plate freelander 1.8 with a manual gearbox a week ago. Got it reduced price as I was told the clutch needed replacing. Seemed genuine as it's difficult to change gear, especially from 1st to 2nd.
Took it to a clutch specialist this morning and got a call an hour later saying the gearbox and transfer were shot as they'd drained them and found metal shavings in the transmission fluid, and on the magnetic plug in the transfer box. So they'd filtered the bits out and replaced it and said it was pointless fitting a new clutch without changing the gear/transfer boxes.
They recommended I take it back to the dealer, as the rear wheel brake had also seized (which was causing the clutch to wear out)
Upon googling it seems that these metal shavings might be part of normal wear and tear and a new clutch would sort the problem of the awkward gears.
Any ideas on this? I don't want to go back guns blazing to the dealer if it's normal.

ETA: Forgot to say, there's also a thumping noise when you bring the clutch up, especially in 3rd and 4th...Is this still a clutch issue?
