I guess I'm missing something obvious here..

Some time ago I reconditioned front and rear axles (had all half shafts out), swivels, fitted new brake discs, calipers & pads.
Now the engine is up and running I thought it be a good idea to check that I put everything back together okay by running it in gear whilst up on axle stands. For some reason I can't get the damn thing in gear, no movement from either axle what so ever.

Also, after refitting the handbrake cable to the handle it doesn't seem to be working..

HELP!!!!

:) :)

Bit of a noddy question, but check the transfer box is in gear ;-)

Thanks David, feel particularly stupid!
Ah well I have a good excuse have never driven a landy before!!

Good news is all 4 wheels are running okay in each gear just have an issue with bleeding brakes now. I fed all the new brakelines with one of those easybleed kits (air supply from tyre forces fluid to the calipers) although I must still have air in system as front offside won't respond to brakes at all and they're very spongy.

Any ideas anyone regarding the loss of handbrake??

Thanks

Glad to help - wasn't sure of your level of experience so was worried that that suggestion might come across as flippant - we've all been there though!

Might suggest popping off the rear propshaft and the transmission brake drum and having a look - not sure really what you can tell unless you have a look. Then you can see if the shoes move properly.

David

Hi Graham, you didn't by any chance wind off the transmission brake on the drum adjuster did you, when you took everything apart?

When operating the handbrake, do you get any sense of anything happening/tightening?

HA HA HA I did exactly the same with my transfer lever as well, thought i had destroyed my gearbox on a pay and play day untill someone pointed out it was in neutral :eek::eek: I'll NOT do that again:p

Hi, as far as I recall I haven't touched any of the handbrake components under the car, just disconnected the cable to get the centre console out to remove all the carpets.
It does feel like the handbrake is tightening when pulling up the handle, just doesn't stop the wheels from moving as soon as I engage gear or spin the wheels by hand..

In that case I wonder if the shoes in the drum have moved out as a result of the handbrake cable being disconnected and the transmission being run-up.

Might I suggest that you identify the drum adjuster, screw it up tight and the drum should be locked, then back off the adjuster just enough to free off the drum.

That might help.

Good luck

Dave

Thanks I guess I need to remove rear prop?

Okay I think thisll be another embarrasingly obvious one..
The handbrake is working by locking the prop, but the wheels can still spin????

Running the car with wheels off ground I put the autobox in gear. Switch it off and all wheels can turn with handbrake on..
Please don't tell me I got serious problems have put over 12 months into getting this on the road!!

Hi Graham, assuming you have all four wheels off the ground - when you say all the wheels turn, can I just ask, if you turn the osf wheel clockwise, does the nsf wheel turn either clockwise or anticlockwise? If it does, that is perfectly normal behaviour.

You should be aware that the handbrake does NOT lock the wheels - just the transmission. Do not expect the wheels to be locked just because you have the handbrake on.

Still doesn't make sense to me, if the handbrake works by locking the props how comes all wheels can spin off the diffs without props moving.

Great, thanks.
Both rear wheels will spin in opposite directions off the diff.
However both fronts spin in both directions independantly. I.e I can spin the front n/side wheel forwards ir backwards and the offside one doesn't move.

Am just paranoid of dropping the motor off thd axle stands to find it will roll off into next doors garden!!

Hi Graham, you really need to go and have and relax. From your description, your cars transmission is operating EXACTLY as it should. What you are struggling with is how diffs work. Once you understand this, you will understand why your wheels are doing what they are doing.

Might I suggest, you put your car back on it's wheels, with the handbrake on, it won't go anywhere, drink lots of beer and relax, it'll be ok honestly.
