you are best using hand brake letting the car settle then applying park

Maybe, which it does and it’s which easily identified with the short settling movement of the vehicle, but initially the foot brake holds the vehicle then P is selected, and then hand brake on, foot brake off, but then I don’t really know what I do it’s automatic after 31 years with a LR auto. Must pay attention

Thanks for that, so having a hand brake holding the load, there is still a lot of pressure put on the gearbox?

no hand brake has 4 x10mm bolts holding it to the transfer box housing

Ok I’ll pay attention and give it a try, so the plan is... I will stop with the foot brake first, as u do, but then it’s on with the hand brake before select P.
Let’s see ,I may find that is what I’ve been doing all this time
Or not.

Got ya, I was having a blonde moment. Well I've ordered the drum,shoes and springs now at least it will last. I dread to think what I'm going to find when I take the rusty flaky old drum off
But a big thank you guys , I've learnt something I didn't give a thought about.

Trick with the shoes is to build them up with the springs etc off the car then fit/stretch them over the flange as getting the springs on the shoes in situ can be a right toss.
Fit top shoe frst then you can pull the lower one into postiion.
