Just took my limping Landrover 110 turbo diesel g reg to someone who said transfer box is shot. Anyone else agree?

The landy had been clunking for a while as if gears are disengaging and locking back in from the gear stick area.

Now it will completely drop out of gear and I can sit revving then it will loc back in.

If I engage dif lock it drives with out the clunk but u can hear a slight knock.

All gears seem to work in dif lock and when in normal will move the car but drop out.

I thought the transfer box was to do with the dif so if that's dead why does dif lock all it to drive?

Anyone have any input or ideas as I don't want to spend money on a box when it's the gear box.

Also anyone in Cardiff area know a good mechanic who won't charge the earth and knows his way around a landy?

Does it jump out in all of the gears?

It sounds as though the gears are not fully engaging.

It could be that the gear selector retaining spring needs replacing.

When in normal drive hi or low it will just out of all gears with loads if clunking and grinding noises.

In dif lock low or high it will drive fine I can occasionally hear a clunk or knock. But it doesn't jump out of gear at all.

sounds like a duff diff or shaft/cv to me not a tranny box issue, had something very similar when i snapped a half shaft not long ago

...with respect to your question about local mechanics I would recommend Huw Haines at HBH Land Rover, at the roundabout at the top of Nantgarw Hill.
