does anybody know if it is possible to change the transfer box on my 200tdi defender 110 for a discovery unit without dropping the gearbox, i don't have access to lifting gear to remove box, thanks in advance LEE

any jobs are possiable but best advice is remove the lot, while its in 1 lump you can pressure clean the whole unit so when you dismantle it no crap drops into the box and also you will have a better veiw on what you propose to do especialy when matching the parts, hanging upside down your arms and legs in knotts trying to fit some thing you cant see and putting things in the wrong place, believe it, it does and will happen

Relatively simple job, but you need strong arms if you on your own. Remove both floor panels, trans tunnel and centre seat box cover. Remove front and rear props from transfer box, hand brake assembly and PTO cover support bearing and the gear assembly (makes reassembly much easier). Disconnect breather pipes and dif Hi/Lo rods. Undo the bolts that hold transfer box to main box and slide it back off the input shaft.

Almost forgot. When you reassemble run some silicone sealer around the mating faces around the input shaft, saves a lot of hassle if you damage the seal as you reassemble!
