i have a defender 90 which is fitted with a 3.9efi v8 +autobox from a range rover---the transfer box is a H gate type ----i want to fit a viscous coupling type for more manouverability in rtv trials ---does anybody know if this is a straight swop.???????

thanks steve

The box will be a straight swap near enough but the front prop will need to be about 2 inches longer i think.
Some ALRC clubs have talked about banning this but I'm not sure if they have as yet.
Reason is that technically it was never fitted to a 90 but nothing in the rule book says otherwise.
Be sure you have a good one if you do swap to one as they are getting old now. i had one in my old classic and trialling the chain would slip and make lots of noise! not good as they are expensive to fix and not many spares around.
The other disadvantage is again as they get older they become less efficient in "locking up" and therefore only do so after a front or rear wheel spins a lot. Not so good in mud as you would have stopped by the time it kicks in therefore losing momentum!
Great for turning between tight gates though!

thanks for your info-----if they are banned ---loads of grief as several in club already. surley the 50th aniversary v8's have viscous boxes.
cheers
steve
