Transfer box(?) noise

For the last couple of days there's been a whining noise from the drivetrain of my 1991 200Tdi Defender. Half a mile from home tonight it started rattling. It sounded like a propshaft UJ going. I had a look, and the UJs seem OK, but if I turn either shaft there seems to be excessive play and a rattling / clunking noise from the transfer box, more than the usual. It feels and sounds like play in a UJ when I turn the shaft, but within the transfer box.
The tone of the whine gets higher according to road speed rather than gearbox speed, ie it keeps getting higher as I change up through the gears.
Any ideas, hopefully cheap ones?

Forgot to mention, the transfer box was rebuilt after seizing a couple of years ago, by a very reputable gearbox specialist with plenty of Landy experience.

Have you checked the oil level in the transfer box first of all...

check play in both out put bearings and drop sump plate you can the feel if any of the gears have play or turn knotty by hand

Excuse my mechanical ignorance, but how do you check for play in the bearings?

should rotate smoothly and have no free movement up/down side to side ,though output shafts themselves will move a little as they pivot on the bearing

Sometimes it can be hard to spot UJ problems while they are on the vehicle. Take them off and have a close look. Fingers crossed!

I was just about to say the same... I have had UJ's with sweet FA movement and then you get them off and they fall apart, it depends what position it is stopped in.

I will, but when I get underneath & turn the shafts the play & noise does seem to be from the box

I can't do anything during the week as I have to work in the driveway and it's dark when I get home, and I'm going away for the weekend!

Ahem... slightly embarrassing, I've checked the oil level and there's next to bugger all in it.I removed the drain plug and there's actually very little swarf on it, so is there likely to be some damage, and if so what should I check for?
Is it possible there's no significant damage and I can just refill it?

Bearings could be cooked, fill it up and see how you go...

id be surprised if gear teeth etc dont show signs of contact ,might run ok somewhat refilled but i wouldnt want any long journeys without a strip down

I'm going to take off the cover plate and have a look. What should I use, apart from the standard gasket, to reseal it?

if we are talking the sump plate either or ,rtv silicone sealant needs to be oil and temp resistant

Is this OK, it's a lot cheaper than the Hylomar recommended by LR, and the same temp limit?
