I recently got a Disco 200tdi. I was driving at the week end and started to get a gear crunching noise. Anyway, turns out to be the transfer box. When the Disco is on the lift, I drained the transfer oil and out came bits... If you turn both the prop shafts the same way it jumps teeth in the box?
Been told it could be the planetry gears in diff inside the transfer box. Are these common as he also said you can buy repair kits to fix them. How much are they? Also when driving it into the work shop, it started to push a lot of the gear box oil out of the meeting face of the gearbox and transfer box? One of the mouting bolts had also come lose holding the gear box and the tranfer box together, but when tightened still leaked

Probably LT230 centre diff. You need to diagnose the fault exactly don;t assume its the centre diff you need to take the pto cover off and have a look see aswell as testing to find out whats gone exactly. The tranny box is screwed a second hand one is only about £80 cheaper if its older or unknown.

I only put it on the lift quick will be taking it all apart saturday and need it sorted the same day.. Can you remove the tranfer box with out taking the gearbox out? if not i will put a hole new gearbox and tranfer box in at the same time.. because i dont have the time to rebuild. but will fix the old for a spare. have a new tranfer box lined up to buy..

yes u can its easy to just take tranny box and a lot less weight to andle

when mine went I trwled ebay for one and got a complete tranny and box for 30 squid so built up one good trans box usin the 2 :D

Was told that you couldnt get the the tanny box out without take the gear box with it.. he said there was bolts from both ways holding them together and you could get to them all.. so you had to take it out a one big lump then slipt them.. guess this is not ture then!!

also on a mate disco when reversing there seem to be a tight spot.. if your going really really slow it will make you come to a stop! its only in revers.. any ideas??
