Jumped in my 2004 Range Rover L322 yesterday and warning flashed up "Transfer Box in Neutral" I was driving it the night before and never had any problem or never felt it driving any different.

When I try to put it back into park it is making a weird noise but it goes in easily when i turn off the engine, has anyone else had this problem and is it a massive job?

Thanks in advance!

The ‘weird noise’ is your park pawl ratcheting on the park lock teeth because the output shaft of your transmission is spinning round when you engage Park as your transfer box is in neutral. It might be worth sticking a spare 5A fuse in position 37 and then taking it out again to see if you can reset the shift motor.

or trying the manual recalibration procedure :

thanks mate, could you just confirm what the high to low shift cycles are? I am not the best at these kind of things but don't want o make a mistake when i try it!!

I shouldn’t worry about that bit – just see if you can get either low or high range working. There’s a possibility that, in the unlikely event that it hasn’t already been replaced, your issue is caused by your front propshaft spline having fretted away, so you just need to establish if it is your transfer box at fault.

Thanks mate, the last owner left a fuse in spot 37, I did as above and its now working better than ever!! And isn't asking me to slow down when I'm doing 10 mph!! haha
