Hi all,

Can anybody elaborate on the handbook's description of the automatic P38 gearbox and traction control.

Does it employ a diff-lock? Are somethings in for low ratio and not for high ratio? How good is it compared to more recent models?

I'm asking because I got stuck in mud last week and suddenly realised I had nothing I could 'add in' manually to help?

Ta!

no diff lock ,center diff is locked by viscous coupling,t/c work through abs system in which it applies brake to a spinning wheel so as to provide torque to opposite wheel ,jack a wheel up in turn and make sure it doesnt turn freely

better tyres might help road tyres tend to slip when things get to wet,all terrain tyres will give you a better grip,60%road 40%mud dont go for all mud as you will get80% mud 20% road grip and noisy to but fantasic in mud.the nobbles help flick the mud off allowing better grip

ps the low box is used for better control in steep decents ,and manovring heavy loads on steep hills ect like a digger on the back of your trailer.

If TC is working you need to give it a few revs to get the stuck wheel spinning the TC should apply the brake on that side so transferring drive to the other back wheel. You should see the light come on on the dash when it is working. Early cars it's on the back wheels only later cars it on the front also - big improvement especially in snow. If you go into the mud often fit lockers.
