hi,pray tell do disco 1's need tracking if so are they like normal cars need doing regularly ,reason being ive noticed more where on the inner tread that the outer on the front, towing in a tad
 
Yup every vehicle with 2 wheels or more to an axle requires "tracking"

If you can, get a bit of string, tie it to a point half way up one wheel NSF, run it around the front of that wheel to the other one, tight around the other wheel OSF, and back round the NSF so that it's tight around the wheels. (this won't work very well if you've got mudders on I've just thought) If your tracking is set right, the string will run flush against all 3 sides of both wheels that it's on.

Does that make sense?

read it a couple of times he he he yeah starting to make sense bit tired me thinks ,youd have thought with it being an off-roader it wouldnt need tracking as much
 
Haha sorry, I'll make a photo guide at lunchtime tomorrow, its a really good way for gauging toe angles.

Yeah, but actually with mud tyres, when you're driving on tarmac the scrubbing effect is probably amplified!!
 
100%. Not too sure how usefull it will be though as it won't be on a landrover! But it will give a good general idea of how tracking systems work and how they are adjusted.

Jesus, am I really doing something slightly helpful? :eek:

I bent my steering arms recently. I have replaced them with heavy duty jobbies. As yet I have not had my tracking done. Everytime I have been to get em done the garage have found a reason not to do it. guage is busted, behind on an urgent job, blah blah blah. I am running around on knobblies with the tracking out at the moment and it is like driving on a knife edge. I am gonna have to get it done tomorrow if I can. It is a bit unnerving to say the least.:eek:
 
tut tut ratty :D I'll make up a guide tomorra, I know landies don't use rack and peanut steering but I'm assuming there's still rose joints on either side of the trackrod/steering arm ratty?

I made one out of a length of wood, with a nail taped on. Place it on the rear and mark the position of the nail on the stick, after sliding it against the wheel, then take it to the front and do the same. the difference in the two marks is your tow in/out. Inside of wheels of course and fix something to make sure you do it at the same height both sides. I layed couple of bricks on the ground. Once you have done that and adjusted it you might have to straighten your steering wheel up by adjusting the drag link at front.
