Hi i recently replaced the inner and outer track rods on drivers side , job went fine and i really took my time to have v close to last one , however on test drive the steering wheel was 1/4 ways to the left passenger side , do I need to turn the track rod one more turn outwards to correct ? I will eventually get tracked but for now hoping for a solution , thanks to all

If it is that far out, tracking won't sort it, you do need to disconnect the track rod end and play with it until, the wheel is more central. Anything much over 5 degs (I think) and you'll need to disconnect turn and reconnect. I replaced the drag link recently on my Disco 2 and had exactly the same problem. I had measured it really accurately but made the mistake of locking the steering wheel using the column lock. As you are supposed to do.
I had to disconnect and rotate the ball joint three turns to take out about 45 degs of not straight!

As your disco has a rack & pinion steering system, unlike the older Land Rovers, the steering rack has to be centralised first and then both track rods/joints adjusted so identical to the previously install. Then get it checked via the professional kit available, unless your sure of your of you measurements of course. And the steering wheel is dead central.

Piece of string around all 4 tyres, see how much gap you have between the string on the right front tyre, and adjust the rod to match the left front tyre.
Its short term work around and with the price of tyres these days I would be getting tracking checked asap, always worth having a look for 2nd hand tracking gauges.
The dunlop gauges are decent and easy to use.

Plus 1 ^^^^^ , also check ur steering wheel angle sensor is correct otherwise it will throw up multiple errors, ie DSC etc

Thanks for the replys always appreciated, not having a good month with her , got the tracking wrong , front brakes smoking and can't seem to smooth out the stuckish caliper piston , one playing up on each side up front , oh the usual suspension lights and drop to low after having her up for a bit of work, hopefully she calms down

Re the stuck pistons, get hold of some caliper grease, motor bike shops will have it, places like Halfords won't.
Take the pad(s) out press on the pedal to push the dodgy one out, or if more than one, do one at a time with something like a block of wood in the way to prevent the others coming out, just make sure you don't pop it right out.
Clean it up and grease it with said grease.
Ease it back in and keep moving it in and out a few times, should cure it unless the fecker is shot to pieces i.e. piston rusty or seal fecked. But if it is that bad you should have fluid leaking which will require proper attention. At the very least new seals and pistons.

Thanks Stanley that gave me hope., although il go with new calipers if I need to , I was using a rewind tool to hold the good one and pop the bad on each side , they came out but real dodgy going in , I popped one of the good ones all the way out by accident also but got it back in , just might have got away with it but might not be a true seal or potentially a leaker , time will tell

Thanks all got the calipers going , just get this steering wheel straighter tomorrow and hope the suspension warning light amd lowering calms down

Another trick with sticky pistons is to get yourself a needle and syringe, then inject a few drops of brake fluid thought the piston gaiter at the top of the piston, this will lube the seal from the outside, the needle hole in the gaiter is so small it will self heal.

Did you measure the length of the new track rod assembly from the centre of the ball joint to the rack end face?
All you need do is make sure the fitted lengths between the rack end and ball joint centre match, then you'll be as near as is possible, definitely close enough for the steering wheel to remain unchanged after the work.

Thanks for that , it's pretty much the way I did it lynall after lighty sanding and cleaning the exposed piston

I actually did nodge , I'm bringing her shortly to check tyre pressures just incase as it should be pretty much bang on but top of steering wheel pointing at 10 to , can't live with that, if bad after tyre check it's coming off
