Hi
Am considering purchasing a 2006 Td4 Auto HSE. Facelift model.
I owned a 03 td4 manual and towed many miles, the clutch was definitely the weak point, hence looking at an auto now.
Question is what are the autos like for towing and what weight do people tow?
I know it’s only a 110bhp, has anyone chipped this engine?
The crankcase breather def needs changing, removing the oil filler gave a positive pressure outlet, would this have caused damage over time? Can see it’s not a huge job to fix..
Car has done 100k
Any info appreciated!
Thanks

Breather never made it onto LR service schedule. I've seen the filter solid. Worse case is blow by on turbo seals but if you change it quick and turbo hasn't gone into perma rev (where it feeds the engine on oil and a positive feedback loop destroys the engine) then you should be o.k.

I have a 2002 TD4 auto. It has pulled horse trailer with 2 x 15 hand ponies. It has pulled cat trailer with another Freelander on up Devon's hills. I think the spec is 2 tonnes.

Treat it with respect and it will do most things!! Happy Freelandering!

I think the 2006 FL1 was down spec'd to 1800kg for towing, as it has a higher MAM.
You'll need to check the E11 label for that information.

Have you thought getting an early FL2? It might cost a small amount more to purchase (unless this 06 FL1 is cheap), but the FL2 is 50% more powerful, tows 2000kg easily, will give comparable MPG, be cheaper to insure and tax and is nicer to drive.

Thanks

yes, have thought about a FL2, but the autos are nearly double the price of this really great FL1 example..
Although I get the benefits!!
The later FL1 are 1800kg Max. My caravan is 1480max, kerbweight of the car is around 1700.. so over the 85% guide, but have towed for many years so that doesn’t concern me massively. It’s more about stability IMO.
Breather wise have got no idea if/when it was ever changed, if I buy it’s job no 2, after 4 new tyres..
