hi all,

I'm new here. I thought it might be a good place to find out if a smaller landy will tow a big horse comfortably? I have a long wheel base Defender at the mo - it's great but am thinking of trading it in for a smaller (and hopefully a bit less thirsty) model. But I still need to tow my horse in it. Horse + trailer weigh almost 2 tonnes.

Any advice gratefully received.

Fanks,
Teuch.

hi
i tow 2xmed horses most wkends with a 1994 200tdi disco, and so far never had any probs, its good on fuel 2.:)

Thanks for that. I have just been looking at a chart of towing weights - looks like landys pretty much all tow 3-5 tonnes. Also looks like no other vehicle tows as much.

Cheers.

aup mate welcome to LooneyZone

general rule for towing is you can only SAFELY tow 85% of your tow vehicles kerb weight,
ie. 2000kg 85% would be 1700kg
a litle more IF your really brave but i wouldn't:eek:

a disco would tow upto 2 tons no problem,:D but if you got a hippo you'd blow the head gasket to the moon:rolleyes:

how about a defender 90? short wheel base ( compared to 110 or 130) would be the ideal tow car for a heavy load, coz the power is right on the back end where the axle sits,(if you know what i mean);)
and a little lighter than a 110 or 130 so save a bit of money in fuel,
and you can have loads of fun off road in a 90;)

no disco wins every time:p :p

Hey Sean,

Cheers, that helps a lot. I meant 3.5 tonnes - not 3-5 tonnes! My horse plus trailer together are almost 2 tonnes. But it's nice to have something in reserve.

My current landy (inherited) is a 110 County turbo. It is HUGE, and has about 12 seats too many for me. Interesting about a short wheel base being better for towing. Makes sense. AND you reckon better on fuel. No brainer I'm thinking.

Cheers.

100% of the kerb weight is the legal capacity, but land rover do say they can tow 3500kg .

you say shorter for towing heavy loads? not this cause more swaying than a longer wheel base?

Hey Sean, think you meant Nick:rolleyes:
my names at the top mate:rolleyes: :D

:D
an no problem, thats why we are here, to help out those people who arn't quite sure an need that little bit of advise.

i have towed with short wheel based 4x4s an long wheel base and found for myself that the shorter distance from the tow hitch to the rear wheels the better the load will tow STABILLY

don't get me wrong, i'm not saying a disco WON'T pull 3500kg
i am just saying in my opinion i wouldn't want to put 3500kg on the arse end of my disco
and thats with poly bushes that give a good hard ride, it still moves about a bit at speed, and if it wasn't for the body weight of the disco it would be very scarey:eek:

i'd say i my opinion that no more than 2000kg, absoloute max would tow 2100kg.

so a disco would be fine for towing a horse box but a 90 would be better because of the very small overhang from the body to the axle

hope this helps
an if ya think i'm talkin bollox just say an i'll take the hint:rolleyes:
nick
