im about to fit towbar to my parents p38 next week and found out that you can get a plug in electric tow kit in stead of the usual crimping tool job. anybody bought a plug in kit before and does it alter any of the electrics on board dash. as still got the srs light on from just changing the battery and somehow gotta get it:confused: reset yet. any help greatly appreciated folks.:p

Hello! Just joined myself, but am looking to do the same over the next week. I have read through the appropriate workshop manuals and cannot see anything apart from "plug 'n' play" for single electrics for a towbar. The wire passes up through a grommet at the rear/passenger corner (on RHD models) to a connector block just inside the rear boot space. If you need, I can e-mail you the picture-instructions that I have.

hope this helps

Bob

there a connector block in drivers side as well as pasengers side, i had alook today. have you seen the pug in kit? as i havent yet and any idea where you get them from anybody?

Plug in trailer light socket (12N) comes with the genuine Towbar kit-don't know if they sell the socket & lead separately. The 12N socket cable plugs into spare socket located at rear r.h. side behind light cluster. The spare socket located behind the l.h. cluster has wires from 12V+ ignition on supply together with Ground and reverse light wire. This socket is for powering relay used for 12S (Grey) caravan auxillary circuits e.g. battery charge, fridge etc.

thanks IRISHROVER does that mean if i can buy a twin kit all i have to do is plug in each side and thats it or is any other work in volved. as with caravan they want to charge battery and fridge on the move.

with the 12n it is a plug in kit.. £95 from LR I believe - probably a lot cheaper elsewhere.. this one for eg...

although there were disco ones cheaper in the same place - no idea if it is the same socket but guess it is...

now then the 12s (for the fridge etc) is a bit more complex... LR dealer quoted me £195 to fit one... it requires a split charge relay, wiring to the battery and fusing. If LR do it they add the fuse to the fusebox and the relay to the existing bank of relays... I paid a towbar guy £50 to do mine instead...

You will have to buy a separate relay from a caravan accessory shop which you can mount in the space behind the l.h lamp cluster. Additionally you will have to run a 4mm.sq. single cable-fused-from the positive terminal on the battery to the relay contacts for the fridge & battery. Also you will have to provide a heavier ground (Negative) wire from the body to act as a return path for the auxillary loads as the black ground wire in the spare plug is not heavy enough, it will however power the relay coil.

Well Thanks Chaps, Now I Know Its A Silly Question But When Wiring Up The Towbar Is It Likely To Cause Any Problems To The [brain} As Like On Defaults Occuring After Fitting On The Dash Display. You All Know What I Mean. Also Any Body Had Lpg Fitted And Price And Recommendations. We Live In Surrey And We Toying With The Idea.

Npne whatsoever. The trailer indicator lamp on the dash automatically kicks in when the trailer plug is inserted. As the P38 does not use the later CanBus system, it's more straightforward. Just make sure you have sound connections and adequate cable size for the loads/
